Mary Helen Exley Everette

Mary Helen Exley Everette passed away on Tuesday, September 21st at Candler Hospital.

Helen was born on January 2,1944 in Savannah, Georgia. She graduated from Savannah High School and was a homemaker for many years before working for nearly two decades at The Christmas Shop and later Belk. After retirement, she spent time in Burlington, Vermont and Portland, Oregon before returning to Savannah. She was extremely creative and artistic and used her talents to design and string fine jewelry. She was self-taught and created pieces using pearls and semi-precious stones for several jewelry stores throughout Savannah.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Eleanor Inglesby Exley and Edward Lovell Exley. She is survived by her daughters, Helen Powel Everette (Tom Strangi), Amanda Walker Everette and Eliza Daniel Everette Jawiyambe (Lazarus); grandchildren Chance Everette, Grant and Omani Jawiyambe, Colby Strangi (Rashmi), Andie Strangi (Rich); and great-granddaughter Clementine Strangi.

Per Helen's wishes, there will not be a service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Tiger Haven (237 Harvey Rd, Kingston, TN 37763), The Humane Society (7215 Sallie Mood Dr, Savannah, GA 31406)  or a charity of your choice that supports animals.

Hard to believe she's gone. I have so many great memories with Helen. My fondest memories of visiting Savannah as a child always featured lurking at Helen's desk in the backroom of the Christmas Shop. I thought she was so elegant and had impeccable style (I stand by this appraisal as an adult) and was in total awe of her. And she was kind enough to tolerate my likely annoying child-self lingering for far too long. She was one of a kind & will be greatly missed. My thoughts go out to those closest to her.

So sorry for your loss. I remember Mary Helen from SHS. We shared lots of girl secrets and had good times in class and at lunch ( in the stairwell). She had a beautiful smile. She was a very nice person. Praying for you all.
