Celebrating the life of

Bernie Goode

November 16, 1936 - September 06, 2021

Bernie Goode

Bernie Goode “CROAKED” on September 6, 2021 at Spanish Oaks Retreat.  For those that knew him, you will understand his sense of humor, and how he collected and wrote a pamphlet on “designer” ways to announce someone’s death.  The above was his wish.  I kept my word – Love Ya!

Bernie was born in Savannah on November 16, 1936 along with an identical twin, a surprise to his mother and father.   After graduating from Georgia Tech, Bernie began his long career with the Army Corps of Engineers.  He first worked in the Savannah District, then the Jacksonville District.  In 1975, Bernie was promoted to Washington, DC and served as Chief of the Regulatory Branch.  Bernie remained with the agency until his retirement in 1989.

In 1996, Bernie and his first wife, Diane, moved to Tybee.  He was a proud Tybee resident, volunteering in many ways:  15 years with the Tybee Lighthouse Museum, 22 years with the Tybee Island Optimist Club and 7 years with the Social Apostolate in Savannah.  Bernie was also an active member of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church.

In addition to his volunteering, Bernie was an avid hiker/walker.  In 1992, Bernie thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine.  He section hiked the American Discovery Trail from the Atlantic to the Pacific with his brother Joe.  His first wife died in 2002.  Bernie and Beverly married in March of 2005.  The ceremony took place at Christ Chapel, better known as “the smallest church in America” located in Townsend, GA.  Father Costigan officiated, with all of Bernie and Beverly’s children and grandchildren in attendance.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret (Nelson) and Jamie Goode; his first wife, Diane (Brooks); brothers, Tony and Jamie and sister, Sister Margaret (Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur).  He is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Beverly P. Goode of Savannah; twin brother, Joe (Mary Jean) of Dunwoody, GA; five sons, Jimmy (Cary) of Tybee Island; Charlie of Savannah; Chris (Kristy) of New Smyrna Beach, FL; Kevin of Nags Head, NC and Matt of Tybee Island; step children, John (Billie Joe) of Dawson, PA; Stacie (Dave) of Lake Monticello, VA; Dallas (Ray) of Johnson City, TN; and Kristal (Oscar) of Irwin, PA.  Bernie is also survived by three grandchildren, Johnny, Timmy and Katie Goode.

A funeral mass will take place at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church on Monday, September 13, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Spanish Oaks Retreat, 8510 Whitefield Ave., Savannah, GA 31406.

Jimmy, over the last couple of months I have learned about your special relationship with Bernie. You two were friends and had some special memorizes - including hiking the Appalachian trail together. Happily God designed us so that we do not grieve at the same intensity for the rest of our lives.
