Peggy Worrell Murphy

Peggy Worrell Murphy

Peggy Worrell Murphy, 91, died Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at Memorial Health University Medical Center. 

Born in Savannah, Peggy was the daughter of the late Lillian Burkhalter Worrell and Rives Edward Worrell. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Walter B. Murphy, Jr. 

Peggy attended the Savannah public schools, graduating from Savannah High School in 1947 and Armstrong Junior College in 1949. She continued her education at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia graduating in 1951. In 1978, she earned a master's degree in elementary education from Armstrong Savannah State College. 

Peggy worked for the Chatham County Public School system for 22 years. She was a primary teacher, a reading teacher, a teacher facilitator and was one of the first two assistant principals appointed in the Chatham County elementary schools. 

As a longtime member of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, she served on numerous committees including the board of trustees and was chairman of the decorating committee when the sanctuary was refurbished in 1996. Peggy served as secretary, vice president and president of the United Methodist Women at Wesley. She was also a member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. For 25 years, she was a volunteer pink lady at Candler Hospital where she also served as one of their presidents. 

Peggy enjoyed being with her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing bridge, gardening and crocheting making many shawls and baby afghans. She was a member of the Savannah Golf Club and the Chatham Club. 

She is survived by her son Walter B. Murphy III and daughter-in-law Cindy; daughter, Judy Murphy Cowart and son-in-law, Robbie; four granddaughters, Meghan Jue (Jason), Colleen D'Arrigo (Paul), Rachel McGirr (Sean) and Kelin Garrett (Clay); seven great-grandchildren, Creighton, Rives, Gordon, Murphy, Emmeline, Burke, and Colin; sister Elizabeth Davis (Tom), a niece and four nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2021 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. Funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

Dear family: I knew Peggy from Wesley Monumental (Jane Shirah Circle) and visits to her at home. She was a lovely person, smart and gracious. Her warm smile and keen wisdom were a large part of her personality. She will be dearly missed. Blessings and prayers.
