Celebrating the life of

Martha Sims Buttimer

Passed away on May 20, 2021

Martha Sims Buttimer

Martha S. Buttimer, 88, of Savannah, GA passed away at her home on May 20, 2021.

A native of Savannah, she was the daughter of Roy R. Sims and Willie Altomease Hill Sims.  Martha graduated from Commercial High School and went on to work at Union Camp where she met the love of her life, Patrick Joseph Buttimer Jr.   Sadly, Pat passed away in 1968 leaving Martha to raise her four children.  Martha instilled a strong work ethic in her children and was immensely proud of the people they became.  Martha went on to work at The Pirate’s House as the Office Manager and Herb Traub’s right hand for 22 years.  After that, Martha worked in the Accounting Department at Memorial Hospital and retired after 18 years of service.   Martha was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament and St. James Catholic churches.

Martha enjoyed cheering on her children at their various sporting events and was known to give unsolicited direction (i.e. yell at) their teammates, much to her children’s embarrassment.  Martha loved ALL sports having been a basketball and tennis player as well as a bowler, golfer and line dancer.  She loved the Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons.  She never encountered a sport she didn’t enjoy watching … even Curling!  Martha also spent many happy days on Tybee soaking up the sun.

In addition to her parents and husband, Martha was predeceased by her brothers, Roy R. Sims Jr. and Daniel R. Sims and her granddaughter, Melissa Blaine Coleman Bunton.  Survivors include son Patrick Buttimer III (Patricia) of Longwood, FL; daughter Susan Coleman (Bruce) and sons Terrance Buttimer (Pam) and Stephen Buttimer (Kent) of Savannah.  Grandchildren, Patrick Buttimer IV, Kathleen Budd (David), Brittany Feus (Karl), Caitlin Buttimer (Connor), Collin Cronje (Diedeliff), Stephen Buttimer, Sims Buttimer and 6 great grandchildren.  Sister, Mary Sims Larson (Dick) and Sisters-in-Law Helen Marie Buttimer, Molly Buttimer and Mayette Sims and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday May 24th at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel at 10:00 am with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 am.  Interment will follow the service at the Catholic Cemetery on Wheaton Street.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to St. Vincent’s Academy, 207 E Liberty St., Savannah, GA  31401 or the charity of your choice.
