Celebrating the life of

Cathy Morton Gay

January 01, 1961 - April 16, 2021

Cathy Morton Gay

Cathy Ann Morton Gay, 60, passed away peacefully in Florida on April 16, 2021.

She was the first-born child of the late Leonard Morton and Mary Pledger Powers in Chattanooga, TN on January 1, 1961. Cathy was a graduate of St. Vincent’s Academy in Savannah GA in 1979, and later graduated with high honors from Armstrong Atlantic University with a degree in nursing. She and her husband Gerald married in Savannah and began to build their family. Cathy was a member of the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and continued to participate in services wherever she lived. She and her family moved to Florida to allow her to further her education in nursing, and to work at multiple hospitals, including Halifax Medical Center as an OR nurse, Daytona General as an ER nurse manager, and Peninsula Hospital as an OR nurse. Cathy later owned and managed the family business, Uplift Crane.

When Cathy wasn’t caring for her two sons or working, she loved being with her close family, spending holidays, vacations, and special events together. As the eldest daughter in her family, she helped raise her younger siblings. She spent many hours reading fiction, cooking, and later became an avid gardener when she lived on a lake. College football took up her Saturdays, and she bled orange, her favorite color! The Tennessee Vols was her team, and she even named her dog Smokey. She also adored her best friends through life—her dogs, Chassie and Lucy. She loved to share positive quotes each week with her family and friends.  Her favorite was: My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with passion, some compassion, humor, and some style.

Cathy leaves to treasure that quote, her survivors: husband, Gerald Gay; sons, Gerr Gay and Corey Gay; sister, Polly Keenan; brothers, Allen Morton, Steven Powers, Robby Powers, and Todd Pescuma; grandchildren, Nathan Parker Gay, Brianna Gay, and Aleeah Gay; sister, Polly Powers Keenan; and brothers, Allan Morton, Steven Powers, Robert Powers, and Todd Pescuma.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

I just learned of Cathy's passing. Cathy and I graduated together and were in the same homeroom for three of our four years. Cathy was always so sweet and kind and beautiful inside and out. Through the years, I had wondered what happened to Cathy and am glad to know she led a full and happy life. I am so sad for her family and all those who shared her life now. I remember us turning to each other in homeroom sharing jokes and stories each morning. Such a wonderful person. May the memories of your sweet Cathy sustain you. With Christ's love and prayers, Josie Murphy, Class of '79, St. VIncent's Academy

I just found out about Cathy's passing, my deepest sympathy to her family. Cathy was a wonderful person, mother and friend. She had a beautiful soul and I miss her a lot. I take comfort in knowing that God had a special place reserved for her.
