William Calvert Sires

December 31, 1936 - April 23, 2021

William Calvert Sires

William Calvert Sires Sr., 84, died peacefully at his home on Friday April 23rd, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.

William was born in Savannah to Earl Wayne Sires and Sarah Saunders Sires, where he was one of seven children.  He graduated from Savannah High School in 1955. 1956, he married the former Ann Mincey and they had five children.

He began working for the Savannah and Atlanta Railroad in 1958 and went on to the Seaboard Coastline in 1972. He was promoted to Engineer at the New CSX Railroad also in 1972. In addition, he served eight years in the Naval Reserve and served six years as Secretary and Treasurer for the local division of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. William loved spending time with his family, telling stories about Savannah and his childhood. He will be greatly missed.

William was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Mincey Sires, his sisters, Sarah Ellen Sires, Bea Sires Moreno and Shirley Sires Tanner and his grandson, Ashley Alexander Mosely.

William is survived by his children; Tracey Lyon (Bob) of Baltimore, MD., Amy E. Karlewicz, Ann Ryan Mosely, William Calvert Sires Jr (Jeri) and Sarah Eileen Sires (Coleen) all of Savannah, GA;  his grandchildren, Joseph Eric Lyon (Emily), Emily Lyon Storck (Scott) of Baltimore, MD., Andrew Joseph Ryan V , William Jordan Ryan, Caitlin Marie Ligameri, Michael Vincent Ligameri, McCaulley Eileen  Coursey, McKenzie Marie Karlewicz, William Calvert Sires III, Maxwell Roland Sires, Christina Rose Balcazar, Rory Marie Walsh and  Owen Walsh; his great grandchildren, Abriella Marie Galston, Jaxon Anthony Carter, Anastasia Rose Coursey, Adelaide Rose Balcazar, and  Mason James Storck. He is also survived by his brother, Earl Wayne Sires Jr., Clare Sires Connor, and Becky Sires Stegin; numerous nieces and nephews. Also, special friend and companion, Bess Chappas.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 -11:00 a.m. on Tuesday April 27th at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church at 14 W. Anderson Street followed by a celebration of his life also at St. Paul’s Church. Burial will follow immediately at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park on Wheaton Street. Pallbearers will be Andrew Joseph Ryan V, William Jordan Ryan, William C. Sires III, Maxwell Roland Sires, Noah Brenton Mosely, and Andrew Joseph Ryan IV.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to Hospice Savannah, at P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
