Celebrating the life of

Robert (Bobby) Leon Sturgess

September 11, 1954 - February 25, 2021

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7:12

Robert (Bobby) Leon Sturgess

Robert “Bobby” Leon Sturgess entered in to eternal life on Thursday, February 25, 2021. He was 66 years old.

Bobby was born September 11, 1954 in Savannah to the late Helen and Julian Sturgess. The lifelong resident of Savannah was a 1973 graduate of Jenkins High School.

Bobby Sturgess was truly something special to everyone he knew; Bobby never met a stranger and his desire to help and his knowledge of how to get things done was only surpassed by his ability to see the good in everyone. Bobby did not see color, status, or background… Bobby only saw the person.

Bobby loved and treated everyone like family. There are no words to express the love he had for his family. Bobby embodied the Golden Rule in a way that would make Jesus proud. This page could be filled a million times with all the examples of his going to extraordinary lengths for others. Everyone has at least one “Bobby Sturgess story” and most have too many to count. He was truly a great individual, just ask anyone.

Bobby leaves behind his wife, Rebecca; and four children, Rob Sturgess (Laurie), Chris Sturgess (Stephanie), Marcus Sturgess (Laura), and Mandy Smith  (Aaron); seven wonderful grandchildren, Ashton, Leo, Brooks, Blake, and Marcus Sturgess, and Claire & Paige Smith.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Graveside service and entombment will be at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, 2021 in Hillcrest Abbey Mausoleum with Rev. Bob Dimmitt officiating.

Pallbearers will be Rob, Chris, Marcus, Clyde, and Jimmy Sturgess and Jeff Henderson.

The Sturgess family would like to express their sincere and heartfelt thanks to Dr. Oguntunmibi (Dr. Wumi) for the exceptional care given to Bobby.

Dear Becky, I was so sorry to learn of Bobby’s passing. He was much too young and full of life. Even though it has been years since I worked with you and knew Bobby through Chris, my memories are of what a fun person he was to be around and he was larger than life. I have great memories of working with you from the time you were a brand new RN and became such an awesome seasoned RN in record time. You were always such a giving nurse and so patient centered that it’s hard to believe it’s been so many years. I know Bobby got the best of care with you advocating for him. Please know how sorry I was to learn this sad news and I will pray for the peace that only can come from Jesus to those left behind.

- Margaret Mills, McCormick, SC

We are truly sorry to hear of your loss. I will never forget his kindness. At a time when our world seemed upside down, he went above and beyond to repair our air conditioning, and wouldn't accept payment. Our prayers are with you all.

- Janie & Mike Foreman, Savannah, GA

- Joann Fountain, Savannah, Ga

My heart aches for this sweet family! Bobby was one of a kind! He was the sweetest, caring man who always greeted you with a big smile and hug. I don't know anyone who didn't love him. He has touched so many lives but none more than his sweet family. We are praying for all of you, but especially his three sweet girls, my former students. Love and hugs coming your way! Bill and Patty

- Bill and Patty Cannady, Savannah, GA

I will miss Bobby’s smile and seeing him in the neighborhood. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and give you good advise. One day I found him helping my son and his friend clean up a neighbors yard. He was making sure they were doing it right and showing them good work ethics. He gave up his whole afternoon just to hang out with them and show them how it’s done. I used to kid Bobby and call him, “my favorite Republican.” I will sure miss you Bobby!

- Holli Perry, Savannah, GA

Condolences to the Sturgess family. He was a great man!

- Chris, Amy, and Maggie Randall, Greer, SC

Bobby was one of the greatest men I ever knew. He was there for me when my own family had turned their backs on me. I was even arrested once when I was 17 and Bobby bailed me out when I had no one to turn to. The Sturgess house was always so inviting, and for a young kid with no home of his own, that was always a great feeling. The way I grew up if you got in a bind the last person you would call was your parents, but that wasn't the case with Bobby. Bobby was a savior. He was always there if you needed him. I wish so badly I had made it back to Savannah to see my dear friend one more time.

- Sean O, Boston, MA

An Amazing human and a wonderful father. I don’t think Bobby was ever seen in public without a smile on his face. Everyone who knew him absolutely loved him.

- joel solomon, tybee island, GA

May God hold you in the palm of his hands during this most difficult journey. You have our deepest sympathies.

- Estvander, Savannah, Georgia

To paraphrase 2 Timothy, Bobby “fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.” Bobby won the battle! I have faith that, even now, Bobby is at rest in his Father’s arms. Rest In Peace, our good and faithful friend Beckie and family your memories will last until you meet again.

- Lehman and Jenniee Brannen, Savannah, Ga

We are so heartbroken for the Sturgess family! Bobby was truly one of a kind! He was one of the nicest people we’ve ever met. Always a big smile on his face & a kind word (or many words... such a chatter box)! We will remember him fondly & cherish the memories; knowing that we are better for having known him. A wonderful soul taken too soon. The world shines less brightly now. Rest In Peace Bobby. Sending love & prayers for the family during this time of immense sadness & loss.

- Melissa & Dusty Nowell, Savannah , GA

We grew up with Little Bobby Sturgess. That is what we would call him. One of the nicest guys we knew. There was nothing fake about Bobby. He loved his family. Bobby may you go rest high on your mountain.

What can I say about such a great person that's not eloquently been said already. Countless days of good times and laughing whilst working. He taught me so much in life, an work. To the point that you wanted to emulate as much as you could, and try to live as he set as an example. Because he truly had all the best qualities you'll ever find and in a person. I know my words don't do it any justice. I'm so very thankful for everything he taught me an values he instilled in us. Rest in peace my brother. Thank you for everything. Thoughts and prayers for his family.

- Greg Smith, Savannah, Ga

Rest in peace ole friend, I will miss bumping into you around here seeing you the true southern gentleman you are and seeing that tender smile but we can take comfort in knowing you will be with God and though you are missed and loved here, we know you do not miss this fallen world as being with God is more than enough. 24“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring." Acts 17: 24-28 "The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3:8

The owners of Holland House from Nollie, to Reggie and Sherry to Bobby have been exceptional people and are the reasons I like going there. Losing Bobby is like losing a family member. Bobby was a better brother to me than I am to my own good brother: always positive, always smiling, always uplifting, always encouraging. Your choice of the Golden Rule is absolutely perfect. I will miss seeing that smiling face.

Sending our heartfelt condolences to The Sturgess family for their loss of a man who was always so kind to our family. We pray Gods love and comfort be with you.

- The Hills, Guyton, GA

I can count on both hands the occasions I had to speak with Bobby. I count each one as a blessing. The conversations always began with his easy smile and ended with a smile of my own. He was a man that made everybody feel like somebody. If anyone has any measure of charm or affability then Bobby had them by the truck load. I’m sad that we will not be able to toast another St Paddy’s together or talk about our love for our kids. The world would be a better place if we could be more like Bobby. I offer my deepest condolences to his family and these words inspired by the passing of another friends father. I pray the pain you feel reminds you that you have loved and have been loved. May that love carry you until you meet again.

WITHOUT LOVE THERE IS NO PAIN I wanted to share my "Bobby" story with you. Since I had moved away from Savannah I had not talked with Bobby in years. My sister passed March 23, 2016 and my other sister Debbie posted it on Facebook. That day I received a message from Bobby Sturgess telling me how sorry he was for the passing of LaWana. He also told me that he was praying for me and My Family. After I returned from Savannah following LaWana's Funeral I sent a message to him thanking him. Bobby didn't just stop with "I'm sorry", he remained true to his word and would send messages of prayer and thoughts of encouragement. Those messages meant so much to me because he not only cared, he let me know that he remembered me and I felt so special Because of THAT. When I found out he had been hospitalized I thought of what reconnected us AFTER years. I prayed and sent a guardian Angel just for him. THEN came the news Thursday and I was in disbelief because of the Circumstances that had reconnected us. It took me THESE few days to reflect back on the things; scriptures, messages and prayers Bobby had shared with me to get me to where I could share THIS with You. I told My Family about His kindness, thoughtfulness and love he so generously gave. And not just those yet his time ALSO. As with many of you, My Heart is filled with pain for this gracious man having to leave so young. He adored his wife, children and Family and was over the moon with happiness and pride for them. I can only try to give back to his THEM some of what he gave to me. I am sending a flock of Angels and Prayers to the Sturgess Family, the same ones that Bobby sent to me when I needed them most. THERE WOULD NOT BE ANY PAIN WITHOUT LOVE AND THE LOVE ALWAYS OUTWEIGHS THE PAIN.

- DeeDee Lunsford Hooker, Woodruff, South Carolina

I will forever remember Bobby Sturgess. I met Bobby at Myers Junior High in the 7th grade and we quickly became good friends. He was a great guy with a gentle nature and we went on to graduate in 1973 from Jenkins High School. As you grow older, you lose track of some of the people you went to school with, but I would run into Bobby from time to time, and it was as if we never missed a beat in all the years that passed. I will miss you my dear friend. Your family was lucky to have someone like you. Love you always, Debi Moody Lanier
