Alicia Hamrick Cowart

Alicia Karen Hamrick Cowart, age 73, died February 2, 2021 under hospice care at Pruitt Health.  She was born in Oakland, California to the late Knowles Shaw Hamrick, II and Ernestine Alice Stanley Hamrick, and moved to Savannah in 1960.  Karen graduated from Richard Arnold High School with a certificate in food service management. She began work with Burger King Corporation in management and partnered with her former instructor at Richard Arnold to give graduates job opportunities.  Following her time with Burger King, she managed a local chain of laundry mats.  After retirement, she worked full-time at playing Bingo and visiting garage sales.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joel Cowart, and sisters, Kathryn Hamrick Wheeler and Dona Hamrick Brantley.

She is survived by her brother, Knowles Shaw Hamrick, III; sons, Richard Albert Slack, Jr., Lt. Col. William Garrett Slack, Sr., and Andrew Alexander Cowart; two grandchildren, Isabelle Grace Slack and William Garrett Slack, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 20, at 10:00 a.m. at Lower Black Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Nick Hencye officiating.
