Charles Godfrey Opper, Jr., 78, passed away peacefully during his sleep on February 6th, 2021 from complications related to heart failure.

The Savannah native was the son of the late Charles Godfrey and Claire Gramling Opper. Charles graduated from Fort Knox High School and received a master’s degree in Mathematics from Armstrong State College. For most of his career, Charles was a computer programmer and systems analyst working for the City of Savannah and Great Dane Trailers. Charles earned the Boy Scouts of America’s coveted Eagle Scout Award and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. Charles was a triathlete and ran many races with the Savannah Striders.

In addition to his parents, Charles was predeceased by a son, Theodore Charles Eric Opper. He leaves behind a daughter, Lisa Michelle Mason; son, Charles Godfrey Opper, III; sister, Diana Claire Opper; nephew, Carrington Gramling Opper; grandchildren, Helena Claire Opper, William Andrew Opper, Floyd Alexander Stewart, Edward Allen Stewart, Emma Tracy Opper and Charles Benjamin Opper; and a great-granddaughter, Amelia Monroe Stewart..

Charles was most often known for his humor that would either send you out laughing or running for the door. He provided for those in need, be it adoption or helping those with no home. With a penchant for classic rock, he lived life by the horns and passed his joy to others. He made many friends along his journey in life as a military son who lived in several states including Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida and Alaska and will be missed by his family and friends.

Close family and friends are invited to join the Opper family a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 15th, 2021 in Bonaventure Cemetery. There will also be a Zoom live streaming, and you can reach out to Fox & Weeks in Savannah for more information.
