Celebrating the life of

Matthew Robert Wallden

Passed away on January 31, 2021

Matthew Robert Wallden

Matthew Robert Wallden, beloved son of Camille and Robert, has passed away.  He is survived by his parents, sister Kelly and brother John (Morgan). He was the fun uncle to August, Inez, Bea, Bosco and Martha and the cherished nephew to many aunts, uncles and cousins of the Barbee, Koncul, Privett, Sheehan, Suderow and Tambon families. Suzanne Groover was his devoted and much-loved companion on many of his greatest adventures.

Born August 15, 1981, Matthew attended Blessed Sacrament School and Benedictine Military Academy, where he made many lifelong friends. He joined the Marines in 2001 and served three tours in Iraq, rising to the rank of sergeant. His valor and selfless leadership were recognized through numerous awards.

Ever a man for others, Matthew had deep compassion for those who suffered. After his time in the Marines, he finished his nursing degree with honors at Armstrong Atlantic University and became a traveling nurse. In the final year of his life, he helped many in COVID wards across the country.

Matthew was like no one else. He was hilariously sharp and infinitely kind, wryly observant and profoundly compassionate. He loved a good time and will be remembered with deep affection by the many friends he made along the way, from his globe-trotting travels to his beloved Phish shows (he attended over 100).

Matthew was predeceased by grandparents Frank and Margaret Wallden and Martin and Marguerite Koncul, Sr., and his cousin Lt. Stephen Nevarez.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2021 with the Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 12, 2021 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.  The service will be live streamed by Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at www.mbschurch.org or on their Facebook page.

Interment will follow in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to the Blessed Sacrament Seeds of Change Building Fund.

Matthew was a light to work with. Always willing to do his best for his patients and coworkers. We are all so sorry for your loss.

- Tripoint CCU , Painesville, OH

I had the pleasure of working with Matthew for the last several weeks. He was always so willing to help and was a truly caring and compassionate individual. On many occasions we had intriguing conversations about the unknown such as aliens and bigfoot. We talked about dinosaurs and mass extinction. More recently we talked about cats and he shared with me that he was planning on getting a bengal. Our conversations were always so enjoyable. Matthew was a fountain of knowledge and I would often find him looking up different research articles and then sharing that knowledge with me. I am glad that I had the opportunity to get to know Matthew. He will be missed by many. My sincerest condolences go out to his loved ones.

Matthew was a terrific guy and a wonderful friend. He was one of the best of us 'ol BC guys from the class of 2000! He traveled to visit me when I was living in different areas of the Southeast. We went to many concerts together and I have many great memories of Matthew: camping with him in Antioch, TN to see my first Phish show and selling grilled cheese sandwiches on the lot. I remember great conversations with him on the phone and over a beer. When he was in the military and was overseas he would write to his friends and one of my favorite correspondences from him was on a Britney Spears postcard he found in one of The Hussein family palaces. I will miss his easy going nature and his kind spirit. I will miss his laugh. I hope that he has found peace. I hope that his family will take comfort in seeing all the lives that he has touched.

- Stephen Donahue, Savannah, GA

Matt and I went to nursing school together in Savannah. He was always so pleasant to have in class. Although quiet and reserved most of the time, he always had a friendly smile and offered help if you had a question. I remember when we learned about travel nursing in school how we both thought it would be such an awesome experience getting to travel doing something we liked doing. I’m proud to call him a classmate, colleague, and a friend and sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to all his family and loved ones.

- Melissa Delgado, Roseville, CA

I had the sincere pleasure of having Matthew as a classmate and friend during nursing school. He was a kind and compassionate soul. His warm smile and quick wit made him a joy to be around. In his years of nursing since then I know he has helped so many. Praying for peace for all his family and friends. Rest in Peace, sweet Matthew. Too soon gone.

My heart is sadden at the loss of Matt. I had the opportunity to work with him on his travel assignment in Beaufort where he stayed a year. He was so easy going and a pleasure to work with; and became part of the team quickly. He even volunteered to be in the raft race with us! His bedside care was gentle and frequently visited with patients that he had cared for, but not necessarily assigned to for the day. Matt was the team member that you wanted to be working with because he was always there to help and he was a strong, confident nurse. Blessings to his family. Matt will definitely be missed and nursing has lost a comrade in arms!

- Marla Slock, Hardeeville , SC

My thoughts and prayers are with the Wallden family.
