Celebrating the life of

Joseph Charles White, Jr. "JoJo"

Passed away on February 01, 2021

Joseph Charles White, Jr.

On February 21, 1951, Joseph Charles White, Jr. and Ethel-Marie Katherine Williams White became the excited and proud parents of a happy, inquisitive, bustling baby boy, Joseph “JoJo” Charles White III.  Joseph “JoJo” III grew in statue and knowledge, as an adolescent, continuing to make his parents and family proud.  Along with his siblings and parents, he became a well-respected young man in the community.  His strength and personality won many admirers wherever he went, until his passing, February 1, 2021.

Joseph was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York.  He attended public school districts of Kings County, Brooklyn, where he was recognized by teachers and friends for being a curious, focused and diligent young man who liked to do things well and liked taking care of his younger siblings.  His legacy began at an early age.  Growing up, he drew much wisdom and happiness from learning from his father.  His favorite pastimes included training dogs and pigeons, under the counsel of his father.

Prior to graduating school, he aspired to a heroic feat, that of serving his country.  Joseph decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, where his duty assignment involved intelligence.  Shortly after, he married Brenda McCormick, who was a dedicated supporter and doting mother to the sons born to this union.

Among a plethora of accolades and accomplishments, Joseph also earned recognition as “one to be reckoned with” in his service to his country.  He earned, having achieved the highest rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant, an Honorable discharge for his service to the country.

Though he lived in many places around the world during his military career, he relocated to Savannah, Georgia in 2000, at the time of his retirement period.  He then enjoyed life as a retiree, traveling and supporting the local chapter of the VFW.  Joseph’s greatest enjoyment, however, came still, from counseling young soldiers of any branch of military service and from being instrumental in the happiness and the enhancement in the lives of his many Marine Corps brothers and sisters.   He loved his military and his biological families.

He later met and married Dr. Elizabeth Graham and her son, Irving “Tommy” Graham.  Though the union did not last, they remained ardent friends.  JoJo brought encouragement into the lives of those he knew and met but never turned away from the values he learned from his loving, doting mother and father.

Though now in our hearts and memories, his physical presence is being sorely missed by sons: Michael, Joseph IV, Tai’Wand; brothers: David, Earl (Lorraine), Curtis, Richard (Kim), and Robbie (Gina); (Sam preceded him in death); and a sister, Tammy Singleton; one aunt, Leona White, one uncle, Moses “Sonny” White, a grandson Nicholas, loving nieces and nephews, a host of loving cousins, and a host of long-time, loving friends.

A Celebration of his Life will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 8, 2021 at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel.

He will be laid to rest at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Glennville, Georgia.

Joseph Charles White, III was known as “Top White” to his neighbors and friends at Camp LeJeune, NC where we met in 1992. Top White was a “Man of Standard”. He was concerned about your family and he loved his family. Top White was a stern man and if you met him you never forgot him. One of his best characteristics was he loved from his heart. He loved his Marines and wore the uniform proudly. You will be missed Top White. We love you for always. Rest In Peace, Semper Fi. Charles Chambers & Family, Sharpsburg, GA.

The entire Lugo family sends the White family our deepest condolences! Top as I would always call him mentored me over twenty years ago. He guided me, and ways always there whenever I needed him. Over the years without a doubt he became a father figure, friend, and a big brother all in one. I know Top had a major impact on many people over the years, but what I will always take with me is his leadership, his willing to help others, and his loyalty to me and my family! What I will miss the most is our conversations and laughs. I would always find a way to get him riled up when we would speak. The world was a better place with him, and I will always be grateful and honored for our relationship. May he rest easy and always know that I love him and will miss him dearly. Semper Fi and god bless him!!!

Top White was my mentor while on active duty. He was always open to assist in whatever situations we younger Marines needed. I will truly miss the conversations we shared even after leaving the military. My heart is still hurting today with the news of your transit. I love you Top. Buffalo Soldier.
