Celebrating the life of
Delma Edward Smith
February 18, 1949 - January 30, 2021

Delma Edward Smith, age 71, was born in Savannah, GA to Mary L. Smith & Virgil E. Smith from Savannah, but more recently from Ellabell/Black Creek, GA.
Delma grew up in Savannah, attended Juliette Low Elementary, Myers Junior High, Herschel V. Jenkins High & graduated from Armstrong State College. He was a Tomo-chi-chi Order of the Arrow and a proud Eagle Scout. He was also a member of the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. He was an avid bowler most of his life. His fun job was being Nascar Official at Oglethorpe Speedway for 45+ years. In his early career, he worked for U.S. Customs and then eventually retired as a Revenue Officer for the IRS. In 1984, he started his own Tax Consulting business. He was secretary of the St. James Men's Club and a very active member of the Catholic War Veterans.
Although his illness lasted only a month, he fought a very courageous battle. Delma had many wonderful traits, the most admirable being a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He spent a large portion of his life helping others in every possible way. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten by his loving family. His wife: Joyce S. Smith, daughter: Hope Smith Workman (Mark), son: Christopher J. Smith (Sarah), grandchildren: Landon J. Smith and Avery K. Smith, mother: Mary L. Smith, sister: Patricia Ehlers and brother: V. Eugene Smith, Jr. (Marilyn). He was survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, February 4, 2021 at St. James Catholic Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
A private burial will be held at Bonaventure Cemetery.

My deepest sympathy and comfort to all of the family. I had the privilege to enjoy a great conversation with Delma last year when I picked up a few items Hope made for me and my family. I remember pulling up to the house, I knocked on the door and Mr. Smith walks out and had me laughing so hard I was in tears. (We were discussing politics) What a comedian the few times I met Mr. Smith. May the lord give Ms. Joyce strength in this difficult time. Ms. Joyce you have some wonderful children and grandchildren. I am so sorry for the loss of your husband.

Our deepest sympathies and prayers for your loss. Delma was a great man. As a business associate he was a pioneer in the field of client representation. His career accomplishments were truly remarkable. As a friend I will never forget the trips to Las Vegas for our professional education. Delma was such a great joy to be around. But most importantly, he never missed an opportunity to emphasize the importance of putting his family first with unconditional love. He had a million heartwarming stories about Joyce, Chris, Hope and the grandkids. It was unquestionably his true purpose in life. I know he will be in all our hearts and minds forever.

Joyce, I was so sad when HOLLIS first called to tell me of Delma‘s illness and distressed when I found out that he had passed away and gained his wings. I have many fond memories of Delma and HOLLIS and all the many pranks and things that they got into. One of those tended to be pestering me. HOLLIS I know is going to miss him greatly as they remain friends all these years even if they weren’t able to be face-to-face due to living in different towns. Please remember all the laughter and fond memories that you and Delma had together. I know we had a lot of fun over the years. That’s the times that he would want for you to remember. Fondly, Camille

I knew Delma from the neighborhood growing up. Fond memories of German Country Club as teenagers. He was the BEST bowler and I was the worst at the club. They paired us for some tournament and we WON. We use to play a name game as kids and he will always be "Selma Dith" to me. So sorry to hear of his passing.
