Betty Davenport

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Hatcher Davenport, 91, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Betty was born in Harlem, Georgia on January 29, 1929. She was the daughter of Hulon and Elizabeth (Bell) Hatcher of Harlem. She received her BS in Home Economics from the University of Georgia in 1950. She married Edward Alton Davenport in 1951 and they moved to Savannah in 1953. Betty taught for 25 years for the Chatham County Schools, mostly at Hesse Elementary, 5th grade. She was active in the Savannah Garden Club, her Book Club, and with her Church, Grace United Methodist.
She was preceded in death by her husband Al Davenport and her brother Jack B. Hatcher.
Survivors include daughter, Dee Davenport James; sons, David (Jan) Davenport and Dan (Jamie) Davenport; grandchildren, Matthew Stribling, Katherine Stribling, Melanie Davenport, and Tyler Davenport; and step-grandchildren, Jennifer Cooper and Christopher Griffin. Betty also had three great-grandchildren, and three step great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service and memorial to Betty will be held later in 2021, when all can attend safely. Donations in her memory may be made to: Grace United Methodist Church, 6412 Waters Avenue, Savannah, GA 31406 or to the Humane Society for Greater Savannah, 7215 Sallie Mood Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.

I am so very sorry to learn of Betty's passing. We spent many years working together at Hesse - up until her retirement. It was a pleasure to call her a friend. I am sorry that over time we drifted apart. I can hear her voice in my mind - such a lovely southern accent! She always smiled with her eyes as well as her lips. She was a wonderful teacher. May her memory be a gift to all who knew her.
