Mary Stubbs Tyson passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at University Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born in Savannah, daughter of John M. and Moina Stroud Stubbs. She was a graduate of Savannah High School and Agnes Scott College in Atlanta and later earned a Master’s degree in Education from Georgia Southern College. She was very close to her cousin Millie Mallory growing up and thought of her as a sister throughout her life.

In 1952, she married the love of her life, John S. Tyson, III to whom she was married 59 years until his death in 2012. Their marriage was full of love, humor, learning, and faith. They had a deep dedication to each other. Mrs. Tyson had an extensive career in education as an elementary school teacher and later an elementary librarian in Savannah with the Chatham County Board of Education. Above all else, she was a dedicated educator to many students in Savannah. She loved especially reading as well as sharing poetry with her students, family, and friends.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Savannah where she taught for close to 50 years the 5th. & 6th. grade Sunday school class. She was a woman of deep faith and loved her Church family especially the students she taught. She was always active in the events of the Church. Throughout her life she enjoyed sharing her faith with others. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Education Society, the Savannah Symphony Guild, the Telfair Museum of Art, the English Speaking Union and for over 40 years, a member of a group of dear friends that met monthly, “The Movie Club “.

Mrs. Tyson appreciated the artistic talents of others, passionate about art collecting and sharing her art with others. She loved antiques and fashion. Mrs. Tyson never met a stranger and had a wonderful optimistic disposition that always reached out to help others. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She had a wonderful sense of humor, compassion for others, and appreciation of life’s blessings.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Mary Lynn Tyson and Dr. Philip Andrew Horton of Augusta, GA; granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Horton, Esq. of Atlanta, GA; cousins, Dr. Valerie Nix (Patrick Murphy) of Columbia, Maryland and Jane Nix of Laurel, Maryland.

The family wishes to thank the Brandon Wilde Retirement Community, especially the Pavilion staff, for the continued care and support given to Mrs. Tyson while a resident. The family also wishes to thank care givers Linda Jackson, Siglinda Seabrooks and Tyasiah Simmons for the exceptional care and love they provided to Mrs. Tyson.
