Celebrating the life of

Sandra Carter Kent

Passed away on September 22, 2020

Sandra was loved for her quick wit, fun-loving nature, delicious southern cooking, fierce loyalty, honest opinions, endless hospitality, and beautiful, welcoming smile.

Sandra Carter Kent

Sandra Carter Kent, 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, September 22, 2020.  She died as she lived, surrounded by her loving family.

Sandra was born in Bloomingdale, Georgia, the youngest daughter of John Alexander and Cora (Orendorff) Carter. After graduating from Savannah High School in 1960, Sandra began a storied career serving Savannah’s legal community that spanned more than 50 years.  Most precious to Sandra were the 30+ years she worked with Judge Gregory V. Sapp. Sandra started working with Greg in 1990, when he was a fourth-year associate attorney.  She stood by his side as he made partner, and eventually helped him start his own firm.  She proudly joined him at the Chatham County Courthouse when he became a judge in 2011, and she was looking forward to starting her new role as the administrative assistant to Chief Judge Sapp in January 2021.  In 2017, Sandra was honored to receive the Savannah Bar Association's prestigious Judge Edward Hester Award, which recognizes outstanding courthouse personnel who have been particularly helpful to members of the local bar.  She cherished her courthouse family to whom she is, in Judge Sapp’s words, “irreplaceable.”

Sandra was loved for her quick wit, fun-loving nature, delicious southern cooking, fierce loyalty, honest opinions, endless hospitality, and beautiful, welcoming smile.  She loved growing fresh vegetables, ballroom dancing, late-night card games, saltwater fishing, antique shopping, Siamese cats, Alan Jackson, and Elvis.  She always had time and treats ready for anyone who needed a break, a friend, or a sympathetic ear.

Sandra is survived by her daughter, Ashby Kent Fox (Jonah) of Madison, WI; grandson Benjamin Carter Fox of Madison, WI; sister Sarah Flaherty (Ray) of Savannah, GA; sister LaTrelle Earley (Krozer) of Savannah, GA; sister-cousin Peggy Groover (Lloyd) of Hampton, GA; “half-daughter” Kathryn Kent Middleton (Farrell) of Atlanta, GA; and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Larry O. Clark of Bloomingdale, GA; Gary L. Clark of Daisy, GA; Krozer A. Earley, Jr. of Savannah, GA; Kevin B. Earley of Savannah, GA; John A. Earley of Savannah, GA; Jonah E. Fox of Madison, WI; Brian L. Groover of Hampton, GA; Boone Phillips of Savannah, GA; Farrell E. Middleton of Atlanta, GA; William L. Wong, Jr. of Savannah, GA; William L. Wong, III of Savannah, GA; Honorable Gregory V. Sapp of Savannah, GA; and John D. Quante of Savannah, GA.  Honorary pallbearers will be B. Ray Flaherty of Savannah, GA and Donald Lloyd Groover of Hampton, GA.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2020 at Elkins Cemetery on Hwy 204 in Bloomingdale (near the intersection of John Carter Road and Old River Road).  For the safety and protection of our family and friends, all guests must wear masks and maintain a physical distance of at least 6 feet from other guests at all times during the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you consider a donation in Sandra’s memory to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memorial Giving, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Dan and I loved your mom -- her jokes, her loyalty and fierceness, and her friendship. I was so happy to be able to see her more often once I started working at the courthouse in late 2017. She always had a smile and a full candy jar, and I never saw her upset about anything. You have many good memories about her which will sustain you in the years to come. Keep her spirit alive by staying happy and loving your son as she loved you and all of her family.

I will miss Sandra's incredibly sharp (sometimes biting) wit, amazing baking skills, and the love and empathy that she radiated. The courthouse is not the same without her. When I think of Ms. Kent, I always picture her smiling. A courthouse can be gloomy sometimes, but Ms. Kent never seemed to be. She was professional and positive and genuinely sweet. She will be sorely missed.

To all of Miss Sandra’s many families, kin by love she shared so freely: The standard she set for grace, constancy, kindness and generosity brought the best out in all of us. Hundreds of mornings, walking through the 2d floor door, hers was the beautiful, steady, welcoming face we first saw as we entered. We didn’t know Sandra, personally, but we feel like we did! Her cousin, Peggy Groover, spoke so lovingly and highly of her. We have heard stories about how close they are and growing up like sisters instead of cousins! What a remarkable woman Sandra was... as her boss said, “irreplaceable”! I wish we could have met her. We loved her because she was so loved by Peggy.. ❤️
