Savannah lost a true Irish gentleman and a fine Man of the Cloth. Fr McCarthy never missed an opportunity to join the Scouts of Cub Scout Pack 16 and Boy Scout Troop 16 when we would break during our weekly meetings at Blessed Sacrament. He'd walk over and chat with the boys and play some hoop. His strong support of those young men and we leaders, was a major factor in the success of the Scouting program at BS as there were many Eagle Scouts to come out of it. Each year on Scout Sunday, he'd call the boys up and acknowledge each and every one of them! It may not have seemed such a big deal but he made a positive impact on many a young Scout. I had the good fortune of playing several rounds of golf with him and we shared tales of the "old sod" and many a laugh. It's said you can tell a good bit about someone during a round of golf. I found him to be nothing short of a class act! I loved his sense of humor and his Irish brogue! He kept an even keel even after hitting a poor shot and was quite the character to play with. He'll be very much missed.
