Angela and family, My condolences to each of you on the passing of pilot 9. I recall with great clarity the day he brought his first ship up the Savannah River. The name of the vessel was the Witshoal II , and as soon as he stepped off of her, he was sent to an American tanker , the Yosemite to take her to sea. No possible reason as to why I remember those vessels, but I also recall working that day at ATCO, along with his brother Joe. I know Joe was beaming with pride. That was over forty years ago but the memory lingers on. I never revealed that moment to Pilot 9, but I somehow believe that by now , Joe has shared that and many other stories with big brother. May you find comfort and may pilot 9 cross the bar and find peace. John C. McCarthy

To the family, my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Please find comfort in the knowledge that God promises to end all suffering. Before long, God will wipe out every tear from our eyes, and “death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”(Rev. 21:3,4). May this promise from God give you comfort now and a real hope for the future. My deepest sympathy.

Angela Stegin and Johnny Stegin I find it hard to accept that Billy is no longer with us. The last time I saw him was in Maycrest Hardware several years ago now and he had not changed a bit from his earlier days. I always enjoyed hanging out with Billy because he kept the party going in a good way. I will never forget the time he took me on a ship he was taking out of port. What a great experience to be on the ship's bridge looking out over Savannah and the marsh/rivers and getting on to the Pilot Boat along side the ship as the captain increased speed. Although we grew apart as the years passed, I have always thought of Billy as a good friend. The next time I have a drink, I will be sure to have one for my friend Billy Stegin. We have truly lost a good one. My heart aches for your families. JP

- John (Eddie) Pelli, Savannah, GA

Bill Stegin helped our daughter feel at home in a new city and welcomed her into his family. How do you forget someone who does that? Short answer: you don’t. May his memory be a blessing.

Having met Bill only a handful of times, however, each time he was extremely welcoming, warm, and kind to me. He was the real deal and a heck of a guy. My sister was blessed to spend almost two years with him and I’m grateful for all he did everyday for Sarah and Billy. Our heart’s go out to you all in this time of sorrow. You may be gone physically, but you will never be forgotten in our hearts. Sending my love to you all!
