Passed away on August 23, 2018
Gertrud Ursula Brehme died August 23, 2018 in her home under the care of Hospice Savannah Inc. and very wonderful care givers from Vicki’s Helping Hands (Vicki Scott, Virginia Patterson and Diane Simpson) and surrounded by family.
She was born July 31, 1927 in Gotha, Germany. She escaped communist controlled East Germany. The Shearouse family sponsored her when she moved from Germany to New York City. She retired from Abrams Publishing House where she was an editor for 50 years. After retirement, she moved to Savannah. She loved classical music, symphonies, opera and considered Placido Domingo her “boyfriend”. She was also an avid reader.
Surviving are W.W. Bill Shearouse Jr. (Rhonda), Joseph Cafiero Shearouse Sr. (Celeste), Mary Katherine Shearouse Alexander (Daniel), Joseph Cafiero Shearouse Jr. (Haley), Elizabeth Shearouse Bremer (Jay), Stephanie Shearouse Beall (Stephen).
The family will receive friends at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 26 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with a memorial service at 3:00 p.m.
The family suggests any remembrances be made in her honor to St. Vincent’s Academy in memory of Katherine “Bootsie” Shearouse, 207 Liberty Street, Savannah, GA 31401 or Benedictine Military School, W.W. Shearouse Sr. Scholarship Fund, 6502 Seawright Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.
