Celebrating the life of

Carola H. Stone

March 29, 1943 - May 26, 2020

Carola H. Stone

Carola Hassley Stone passed away peacefully on May 26, 2020. Born in Hollywood, CA, as a military brat, her true place of origin was Norwich New London, Connecticut. She attended Williams Institute, later moving to Savannah, graduating from Savannah Country Day School. Despite her exceptional fried chicken, her sweetest ice tea, and years in Savannah, far outnumbering those in Connecticut, her children would still refer to her as a Yankee. She hated lima beans and grits, and was offended by turning on the air conditioning before June. She cringed at the use of “ain’t” and “y’all,” but continued to use the Yankee colloquialism “ay-ya” to express agreement.

At the age of 40, she reinvented herself by going back to school to become a registered nurse. For over 25 years, she worked in Neuro ICU at Memorial Medical Center. The fulfillment she gained from nursing was immeasurable and she received many accolades during her career. She had a gentle hand for her patients and the firmest shoulder for their families.  In 1996, she was commissioned as an Honorary Plank Owner by the U.S.S. Carney (DDG) for the outstanding care she gave to a military patient and his family. Her life flourished from the joy and grace received from serving others. She gave countless volunteer hours to Savannah Hospice, the Social Apostolate and Sacred Heart Church, receiving the Bishop Gartland Service Award in 2016.

Behind her cloaked, mild mannered demeanor, she was an outspoken, stubborn, adventurous soul with a wicked sense of humor. She rose to conquer every challenge a child could bestow upon a mother and seized every moment to be with her children and grandchildren. In 1976, she got her first and most beloved Basset hound, “Valentine.” Her passion for the breed led her to rescue eight more over the years, as she felt her house was not a home without the pitter patter of four feet and the dragging of long ears across the floor. She loved the outdoors, camping, and traveling; and she loved her oldest and dearest friend of 65 years, Mary Buell Bassett (Aunt Bunny). However far apart, their friendship saw them through all of life’s milestones – good and bad, as they were always willing to travel the distances to support each other.

Surviving are her children, Margaret (Peggy) Stone; R. Micheal Stone, Jr. (Susan), Samantha Douberly (Pat); her glorious grands: Lily and Amelia-Cate StoneParker; Carola, Vivian, and Reese Stone; Mary, Anna Grace, and Matthew Douberly and her godson, David Bassett.

The family wishes to thank the many friends and colleagues who have reached out to express condolences or share a story. Whether you worked with her, prayed with her, or grew up running through our home, she loved you all dearly.

Due to COVID restrictions, funeral arrangements remain private. A public celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Sacred Heart Church.

Carola was a fabulous person. I loved her. She was always as listed in your tribute firm with her ideas. I can't say how many times during report, I would get the "over the glasses look" telling me to hush. She was a great leader. The NICU was here baby...it ran like a well oiled machine. She was also very kind and tender while teaching the new Rns. She was a serogate mom to many, myself included. She was a very compassionate and caring nurse. She will be greatly missed and thought of often. Joy
