Celebrating the life of

Julia Yvonne Hartzler

Passed away on April 26, 2020

Julia Yvonne Hartzler

Julia “Yvonne” Gaston Hartzler, 63, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2020, surrounded by loving family.  Yvonne succumbed to a lengthy illness, and complications of a broken heart.  Yvonne was born and raised in Dekalb county, Georgia, the sixth of eleven children born to Bill and Nancy Gaston.  She graduated from Lakeside High School in Atlanta and married her childhood sweetheart, Ray Hartzler.

In addition to her husband Ray, Yvonne is survived by her sister, Nancy Gaston Perkins (Ed) of Venice Beach, CA; sister, Susan Gaston Hobbs of Madison, GA; brother, David Gaston (Julie) of Cropwell, AL; brother, Jeff Gaston (Moira) of Cumming, GA; brother, George Gaston (Bari) of Stone Mountain, GA; brother, Keith Gaston of Cumming, GA; brother, John Gaston (Jan) of Lilburn, GA; and sister, Jan Gaston Sailors of Wilmington Island, GA; her grand-fur-baby, Clint’s beloved dog, Cash, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins and dear friends.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents William Joseph (Bill) Gaston, Sr. and Nancy Surrency Gaston of Dahlonega, GA; brother, William Gaston (Billy) Gaston, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; Elaine Gaston Bryant of Atlanta, GA; grandparents, Samuel Britt and Julia Emma Louise Medley Gaston of Atlanta, GA; and George Houston and Susanna “Sue” Walker Surrency of Jacksonville, FL; and her only child, Clinton David (Clint) Jones of Wilmington Island, GA.

Yvonne and Ray moved to Tybee Island in 1992.  They immediately fell in love with the community, and created a lifetime of beautiful memories with family bike rides, enjoying the beach and island life.  Yvonne’s gentle spirit and loving heart endeared her to family and friends.  She shared a beautiful relationship with her son, Clint, whose passing was more than she could bear.  She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Due to current conditions related to COVID-19, a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date when family and friends can gather to celebrate Yvonne’s beautiful life.  In lieu of flowers, condolences may be sent to Second Harvest Food Bank, 2501 East President Street, Savannah, GA 31404 or to the Humane Society of Greater Savannah, 7215 Sallie Mood Drive, Savannah, GA  31406, both of which were meaningful causes for Yvonne and Clint.

I would like to send so much love to my extended family, my aunt Yvonne’s family. I’m so lucky she married my Uncle Ray and they asked me to be a flower girl in their wedding. I remember those summer nights in Highlands, NC when the thunder and lightning was just bone rattling, she’d let me crawl into their bed in the “cabinet”, as I called it, she’d tickle my back and run her fingers through my hair and make all the noise and flashes just fade away. She was the epitome of love personified. Uncle Ray- if you see this please reach out. I love you and I miss you. - Ceci

I am so shocked and saddened to hear about Yvonne. Unfortunately, it has been years since I have seen Yvonne, or Ray. We were in Elementary school together. I can picture Yvonne coming to dinner at my house growing up, so surprised we could have seconds of any dinner item. I enjoyed seeing the Gaston clan at the last funeral. May y'all find peace. My deepest sympathy, Vivian Vlass Burns
