Celebrating the life of

Betty Jean Boyles Barnette

July 15, 1926 - April 10, 2020

Betty Jean Boyles Barnette

Betty Jean Boyles Barnette, 93, passed away Friday, April 10, 2020 with her beloved daughter and granddaughter by her side, after a brief illness under the care of her physician of many years, Dr. Mohammad Masroor, whom she had great love and respect for.

Mrs. Barnette was a lifelong Savannahnian, born at Mary Telfair Hospital July 15, 1926, to William Mallard Boyles and Ethel Barbour Boyles Lindsey. As a teenager she worked for Star Laundry on Bull Street and then went to work for Union Camp Bag & Paper Company, where she worked for over thirty-three years until her retirement in 1981.

Mrs. Barnette was a member of Bethlehem Chapter #269 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She held many chairs over the years of her membership but her favorite was Chapter Secretary. She also served in Grand Chapter as Grand Port Laurate of Georgia.

Mrs. Barnette loved her church, First Baptist Church of the Islands. She especially enjoyed working with the AWANA children and the beautiful music the choir made. She also had a special relationship with her pastor, teacher and shepherd Brooks Cail.

A cause very close to her heart was the GR8 Commission Ministries, a Philippine mission based in the Aurora Province, lead by her beloved friend Barry Phillips. When in her 80s she was able to participate in three mission trips to the Aurora Province. She also spent endless hours collecting donations, washing, drying, ironing and sewing clothes all to be sent to the Philippines to help fulfill the Great Commission of spreading the message of Jesus Christ.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Talmage Barnette, Sr., sons, William (Billy) James Barnette, Robert T. (Bobby) Barnette, Jr., and sisters, Lillian E. Sharpe and Nora E. Bell.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Jean Barnette Hughes (Corky), granddaughter, Kristina Danielle Barnette (Nick), grandsons, Robert T. Barnette, III (Tanya), Marc E. Barnette (Cindy), Michael A. Barnette (Caycee); daughter-in-law, Belinda Barnette, and sister, Marylee F. Steele.

The graveside service will be private. However, when the time comes that it is safe to gather again a larger celebration of life memorial service will take place. For now please sign our online guestbook at

In lieu of flowers we ask donations to be sent to GR8 Commission Ministries, Inc. PO Box 8154 Wilson, NC 27893, or to the building fund at First Baptist Church of the Islands, 6613 Johnny Mercer Blvd, Savannah, GA 31410.

This is the text Ms Betty sent me after our conversation this past Tuesday. She loved coming to our dock to see her precious Turners Creek. She told me lots & lots of amazing stories about her life on our special creek. She gave me so many beautiful bulbs that are all blooming now. I am going to miss this special lady❤️ Betty Barnette, I am 93 years old or young! I have a date with Jesus one day in the next 10 years ? I have had a good life, worked Union Camp in Bag Factory. Lived on the Island since 1964 on Turners creak between the 2 Bridges. I enjoy riding across the road and looking at my creek ! Me and your daddy ‘s going to throw a crab trap this Summer. I enjoy picking them and eating them right out of the shell! 93” is just a number! Thank you!

There were only a couple of family occasions where we shared conversations with Aunt Betty. Her late sister, Lillie Sharp, was married to my dad, Lester Sharp, for 33 years and I was always so happy to have such a great extended family (still am)! The above obituary was so well-written and touched on all the deserving respect Betty earned in her lifetime. God's Peace to all during this time.

Praying for you all. Ms. Betty was such a blessing to everyone she encountered. I loved her "youthfulness". There is comfort in knowing that she is in the presence of her Lord and Savior now.

As members of her Sunday School class, she will be missed, but at peace knowing she is rejoicing being with God because of her faith and trust in Jesus. God Bless her family during this time.

Miss Betty was such a sweet spirit. Though we knew her a relatively short time, we loved the time we were able to spent with her. We are so thankful that she is in the Arms of Jesus and is in her happy place !! Praying for comfort for everyone left behind.

We just heard the news of Ms Betty’s passing. I met Ms Betty when my parents lived at Summer Breeze. We became friends and I would take my 3 year old great nephew to visit Ms Betty and. Gimma. She always had a treat for Sanders and had to take him on a golf cart ride. She was so proud of her daughter and granddaughter. She shared many memories of her family, her home on the water and the fun times on the dock. I am truly going to miss our visits. Our prayers are with all of the family during this hard time. She truly is an angel in heaven.
