Celebrating the life of

Craig F. Harney

June 26, 1917 - November 30, 2019

Craig F. Harney

Craig Harney, 65, died Saturday, November 30, 2019 at home with his family after a short but fierce battle with cancer.

He leaves his wife of 37 years, Suzanne Harney and his daughters Maggie and Annie Harney; sister Lisa Breeden and Patrick Buckley, and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Sumter and Muriel Harney, and his brother, William Sumter Jr.

A Savannahian through and through, he never met a stranger and loved everyone he met.  An uncommonly gifted storyteller at WTOC, he was a light to all who knew him and he will shine over this community always.

Visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2019 followed by a Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m. at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Bonaventure Cemetery immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to the United Way of the Coastal Empire.

Suzanne, Maggie and Annie,, This is surely a tough tough time for you ,and for all of us, losing such a sweet guy. I know you couldn't be prouder of the person he was. I was so lucky to have him as a cousin and a friend. What a great example of how to live.

- Mike Finocchiaro, Savannah, Ga

From the moment I met Craig I felt the light he carried, his love of Savannah and the love of his family. He was such joy, always laughing, waving hello and telling stories. Once, at the bakery I worked, Craig was in the long line and I overheard it was his birthday. I started the whole line singing Happy Birthday to him, he was smiling ear to ear. He literally lit up at the sight of his daughters. Thank you for welcoming me to Savannah and showing me there are still true gentle men in this world. RIP Craig.

- Michele Calhoun, Savannah, GA

Craig will be greatly missed. The epitome of a gentleman, his friendship to all he met will forward be remembered. I can't attend due to flu, no know that my prayers are with your family. Know that Craig is now healed and at peace. Deepest Sympathies; Howard

Suzanne, Maggie & Annie, My family is so blessed to have had 3 generations of us influenced in a very positive way because of Craig! He is now at home with The Lord and I hope and pray Ralph is there too, reunited with his best journalist friend, telling him another corny joke! Craig was someone who led by his actions and not just by his words, although words are essential for journalism. He was also like Barnabas, always encouraging his friends and church family in the direction of The Lord. But, I miss him as a friend! His counsel was always priceless! Hope to see him again one day. Praying for his family, at home, church and at work.

- Ben Price, Savannah, GA

What a true gentleman Craig was. So kind and sincere, he always made you seem important to him. He was such a big help with the videoing of 3 of my children's weddings. I will miss his gentle spirit. Praying for his family and his WTOC family.

- Margaret Z. Davis, Savannah, Ga.

Craig was one of the sweetest man anyone could ever know and so kind. He always greeted me with a big hug, kiss on the cheek, and his beautiful smile. We loved him so much. Rest my friend and know that you will be greatly missed.

Grew up in Daffin Heights with Craig and remember playing in his backyard. Our parents were friends. My mother told me about the time when Craig was little (and had lost his two front teeth) he introduced himself, lisping, as "Craig Ferguson Harney." Spoke with him recently at the Greek Festival and had no idea he was ill. Rest In Peace, Craig.

- Genie Brazzeal, ,

- Bob and Joy Broderick, SAVANNAH, Georgia

I first met Craigy and Tootie when I moved next door to them, in 1982. I remember knowing right away, in my child-like mind, that these were heartfelt, good people. Craigy never let me down, and he always had this smile and hug for me, and he always had a way of letting me know life was ok. If there was ever a person that loved I conditionally, it was Craig. Tootie, Maggie, Annie, I love each of you. I am praying for y’all! Love.

- Shannon Spofford, Virginia Beach, VA

Suzanne, Maggie and Annie, Glenn and I are so heartbroken to hear of Craig’s passing. He was ONE OF A KIND and we will forever remember his warmth, his sense of humor and his wonderful smile!! We are praying for the whole family. Much Love!!

Our hearts are heavy. Craig was one of the most humble and loving people we have had the honor of having as a friend. No one could ask for a better neighbor or friend. He loved his family with a love that is rare. Suzanne, Maggie and Annie we love you. We pray that God will give you peace and comfort during this time. May He wrap you in His everlasting arms.

- Carl and Jo Ann Spofford, Savannah , Ga

- Fran and Glenn Arnsdorff, Savannah, Ga

Craig was an extraordinary man. He will be missed.

- Miriam Rittmeyer , Savannnah , Ga

It is with much sadness to hear of Craig’s passing. Craig was a bright light. He always had time to listen and encourage others as he did recently as he sat beside me (Keith) on a bench at the Lewis Ctr trying to cheer me up. He was such a creative genius which I (Diane) had the pleasure of working with on multiple occasions. The world has lost a beautiful soul. Craig loved sharing his reasoning behind becoming Catholic after filming mass for so many years. He had such a strong faith and loved his family deeply. Sending love and light to the entire Harney family. You will be in our continued prayers. God bless. Diane and Keith Parker

- Diane and Keith Parker , Savannah , GA

Just heartbroken to learn of Craig’s passing. While at Georgia Southern University, Craig and I had the chance to work closely together on several projects and his professionalism, expertise and general caring about what he was doing was THE reason we had such a great relationship with WTOC. His ability to tell a story, make others feel like a million bucks and his nonstop can-do attitude were infectious. When the cameras were off and the job done, I so very much valued our conversations. While I moved away, we stayed in touch and Savannah has lost a true gym. Condolences to his family and friends. He was one of the really good guys.

- Christian Flathman, Houston , TX
