Savannah - May McCall, 89, died April 24, 2006 at Savannah Square. She was born January 24, 1917 in Savannah, daughter of the late, Charles William and Annie Sloat McCall. She was a 1934 graduate of Savannah High School and received a Bachelors of Arts degree in 1938 from Mary Baldwin College and a Masters degree in Librarianship from Emory University in 1950. Miss McCall worked briefly at the Augusta/Richmond County Library and retired as the head of the Children’s Department of the Savannah/Chatham County Library where she served over twenty three years. She was past president of Savannah Garden Club, past president of Frobel Circle Fresh Air Home, Tybee Island, member of Georgia Historical Society, United Daughters of the Confederacy, past board member Goodwill Industries and Salvation Army, past president of Children’s Georgia Library Association, served as a docent for the Telfair and a member of Candler Hospital Auxiliary. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Savannah, Friendship Bible Class and held various committee positions and volunteered many hours in the church library. She will be remembered by many in Savannah for her talents in puppetry having performed many shows at the library and in and around Savannah. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles W. McCall, Jr., Kelsey K. McCall and Frank S. McCall, Sr.
Surviving: nephews, Frank S. McCall, Jr. Anne of St. Mary’s; Charles W. McCall, II Jean of Savannah; nieces, Judith M. Bass of Savannah; Betsy M. Carufel Dick of Savannah and many great nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
Graveside Service: 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2006 in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
