Betty Kleinsteuber
January 20, 1912 - May 15, 2006
Savannah - Betty Kleinsteuber, age 94, died Monday, May 15, 2006, at the home of her niece in Effingham County. The Evansville, Indiana native came to Savannah as an infant and had lived in Savannah for most of her life. She graduated from the Telfair Hospital School of Nursing in 1933 and attended Peabody College in 1942. After her brother was killed in action in World War II she made the decision to become one of 700 Georgia women to enter military service during the war years.
In 1950 she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health Nursing from Western Reserve University. After the war she secured a position with the Health Department in Savannah remaining with the Department for thirty-five years, retiring in 1974. Among her other duties she was very involved with the Well Baby Clinic. In 1987, while attending a Georgia Nurses Annual Meeting in Macon, GA, she was interviewed for the Georgia Public Health Nursing Oral History Collection at the Robert W. Woodruff Library, Emory University.
Betty was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, WELCA, the American and Georgia Nurses Associations and the American Association of University Women.
Surviving are her sisters, Theresa K. Zipperer of Springfield and Anne K. Leon of Savannah; her brother, Herman H. Kleinsteuber of Savannah; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Burial will follow in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
