CHARLES M. CORBELL
Charles M. Corbell, age 62, died Saturday, May 27, 2006 in Savannah after a lengthy illness. Mr. Corbell was an air traffic controller for over 32 years beginning with the FAA and later with the Department of Defense/Department of Army. At the time of his death he had retired January 1 as Chief of Air Traffic Control Operations at Hunter Army Airfield where he was instrumental in the planning, design, upgrading and completion of the new air traffic control tower. He held past memberships in the Professional Air traffic Controllers Organization, the National Association of Air Traffic Specialists, the Coastal Empire Pilots Association, and other aviation related organizations. During his career, he received the FAA’s Outstanding Performance Award, the FAA Special Achievement Award, and the US Army Commander’s Award for Civilian Service, the FAA Beneficial Suggestion Award, and numerous commendations and letters. He was a commercial pilot and had previously flown charter services for air ambulance flights and South Atlantic Airlines. Mr. Corbell also held various FCC Advanced Amateur Radio Licenses.
Surviving are, his wife of 38 years, Mary Ellen, two sons, Charles M. Corbell Jr., John Ker Corbell both of Savannah, a brother, John David Corbell of Virginia Beach, Virginia and two cats, Mickey “the mouser” and Moshi.
Graveside Services will be Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at 11 a.m. in Laurel Grove Cemetery with Father Patrick O’Brien officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to the American Cancer Society, Society for the Preservation of Laurel Grove Cemetery, Chatham County Humane Society or the organizations of their choice.
