Charles J. “George” Hosti

Tybee Island-Charles J. “George” Hosti of Tybee Island passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2006.

He is survived by Faye, his wife of 55 years; daughter, Bonnie and son-in-law, Norbert Chandler of Tybee Island; daughter Helen and son-in-law, John Etheredge of Winterville, GA; brother, Ernest of Tybee Island and many cousins. He is lovingly known as PaPa to granddaughter Kelsey, Big PaPa to great grandchildren Carrie and Evan and Uncle George to several generations of nieces and nephews.

Charlie was born in Savannah on October 24, 1916. He retired from Savannah Electric and Power Company after 32 years and continued to work independently for many years with Hosti Electric Company on Tybee Island. He served 3 terms as mayor of Tybee Island and then as a Deacon for St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the Diocese of Savannah for 20 years. He was a member and past president of the Sertoma Club and was elected Sertoman of the Year. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 154 and member and past president of the Optimist Club. He served in the Navy during World War II. He provided dedicated service for 20 years to Oceanside Nursing Home where he was affectionately known as “the cookie man”. His commitment and devotion to family, church and community are an inspiration to all who knew him.

The family wishes to express their thanks to all of those individuals who offered their love through prayers, cards, phone calls or visits. Every gesture of kindness is appreciated as a loving tribute to the life of C.J. Hosti.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a Rosary service at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Tybee Island.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 2, 2006 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah. Burial will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery.
