Lamar W. Davis, Sr.
Savannah, GA- Lamar W. Davis, 84, died Saturday, December 30, 2006, at Spanish Oaks Retreat for Alzheimer’s Care. A native of Toccoa, Georgia, he was a veteran of World War II, serving as a flight instructor and combat glider pilot. He attended Spartanburg Junior College and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Business Administration.
Moving to Savannah in 1947, Mr. Davis taught at the University of Georgia Campus at Hunter Army Airfield and later served as professor at Armstrong State College for twenty-nine years. For many of those years, he served as head of the Accounting Department in the School Business Administration. Upon his retirement he was honored with the Professor Emeritus designation.
He was founder of the CPA firm of Davis, McCorkle, and Canady where he worked until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Savannah and Georgia Societies of CPAs, having served as president of each and in numerous leadership positions. He served as a member of the Governing Council of the American Institute of CPAs, the Small Business Advisory Committee, the Advisory Council of the J. M. Tull School of Accounting at the University of Georgia, and as president of the Estate Planning Council of Savannah.
Mr. Davis was for many years a member of Bull Street Baptist Church. He was also a charter member of Memorial Baptist Church, serving as the Chairman of the Board of Deacons and as a member of the Finance Committee. He was a longtime member and past president of the Exchange Club of Savannah and served on the Board of Trustees of the Savannah Science Museum.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph J. and Katie Whitworth Davis, a son, Danny Davis, and five brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Clark Davis of Savannah; two sons, Lamar W. Davis, Jr. and his wife Sarah M. Davis, of Savannah and Lee J. Davis and his wife, Lucie M. Davis, of Peachtree City; a sister, Martha Hurley of Spartanburg, SC; a brother and sister-in-law, Herbert R. and Frances Davis of Cumming, GA; two sisters-in-law, Leila Davis of Spartanburg, SC and Phoebe Davis of Spartanburg, SC; Mary’s sister, Elizabeth Jane Bower of Marietta, OH and Mary’s brother and sister-in-law, Scovel M. and June Carlson of Ormond Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Whit, Betsy, Chris, Danny, and Abby Davis; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Tuesday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Bull Street Baptist Church with Rev. William E. Gardner and Pastor Chris Davis officiating.
Interment will follow in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
