Dewey L. Morgan

September 07, 1926 - January 07, 2007

Dewey L. Morgan

DEWEY LAGRANDE MORGAN, SR
Dewey LaGrande Morgan, Sr. 80 of Savannah went to be with the Lord on January 7, 2007. Although he battled the affects of heart disease and diabetes for years, he was determined to stay involved in his Air National Guard SAFANG monthly and annual reunion meetings. His days to the end were spent with family and among the lasting friendships he had acquired throughout his lifetime. Whether you had become “part of the family” by being one of his “Guard” buddies, someone he had met while putting his engineering abilities to work on automobiles, or through other avenues, he surely cherished those friendships. He thrived on his memories of those encounters. An Effingham County native, he entered the U.S. Navy in 1943, and after attaining his aviation rating, he was inadvertently assigned to the USS Atlas, a landing craft tender. In June 1944 he found himself in the shallow water at Utah Beach during the Normandy invasion. Following the invasion, he was assigned to Air Group 8, USS Intrepid from which he flew the Grumman TBM-3 Avenger. He flew numerous combat missions from the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the liberation of the Philippines thru the invasion of Okinawa, from the decks of the Intrepid, the Shangra-La and the Boxer. Following his discharge, he served with the United Nations relief efforts in Europe. After his return home, he met the love of his life, Shirley Priester, who joined him in marriage the summer of 1947. Later that year, Dewey returned to the uniformed service in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the 158th Fighter Squadron, stationed in Japan during the Korean Conflict. The unit was later reorganized as the 158th Air Transport Squadron assigned to the 165th Air Group later 165th Air Tactical Group. He served continuously as a crew chief, crew member and flight engineer on the C-47, C-97, C-124 and C-130. After 35 years of meritorious service, he received the Air Force Air Medal for flying an excess of 15, 000 accident-free hours. His passion for flying carried on throughout our family and will never be forgotten. He was very proud to be a veteran of the Navy and Air Force - Air National Guard. You can only imagine how happy he was to take his three youngest grandsons to see a C-130 a couple of years ago like Pepa Papa flew. He was so proud to have served his country and at a recent Veteran’s Day ceremony at his grandson’s schools in Richmond Hill, he was honored among other veterans. He was astounded by the recognition he and others received not just from the community but from the young students. Even in recent years, as we watched his strength decrease, he remained committed to volunteer with Meals on Wheels and serve others. We are blessed for the gracious gift God gave us. Dewey was predeceased by his brothers, Berry, Jr., and Dennis, sisters, Cleo Fore and Sara Eva Roberts. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley Priester Morgan, three sons and two daughters, Dewey Morgan, Jr. Helen of Sylvania, Carroll Morgan, Steve Morgan Susan, all of Savannah, Denise Tucker John, of Guyton and Janet Roberts Jimmy, of Richmond Hill. Ten grandchildren; Dewey Morgan, III Kristen, of Pennsylvania, Kris Morgan Katie, Brian Sheppard, Stephen Morgan, Jr., Jean Marie Morgan, all of Savannah, Joshua Morgan Tucker, Ryan Tucker, Samuel Tucker, of Guyton, James and John Roberts, of Richmond Hill. Three Great-Grandchildren; Jonathan, Anna and Stuart Morgan, of Pennsylvania. He also leaves behind two adoring sisters, Dixie Williams, of Bloomingdale and Miriam Shurling, of Gray, GA, other close and dear family members, several nieces, nephews and cousins and lifelong friends. Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. Funeral Services will be Wednesday at 11:00am at Fox and Weeks Funeral Home, Hodgson Chapel. Burial will immediately follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens with full military honors. GUEST BOOK

Dear Dewey, Helen, and Family, I read online that your father died in early January and wanted to extend to you my sympathy. Loosing a parent is one of the most difficult events in life. I will keep your father and family in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Anne Gillins

As a new 2nd Lieutenant pilot with the 158 MAS in the late 60's, I flew many, many missions and flying hours with Dewey. Dewey taught me much more about aircraft engines the 4360 in particular than I ever learned in ground school. I was always very pleased when I found out that Dewey would be the flight engineer on my trip. We shared many layovers and 'clock hunting trips' together in Frankfurt, Germany Rhein Main Air Base- one of Dewey's favorite destinations. We also flew many of those long 15 day trips to South Vietnam together. Dewey was an outstanding aviator, professional in all that he did, and a great person! He will always be one of those few guardsmen whose memory is always cherished and who are in fact, truly irreplaceable.
