Savannah- Amanda Hancock Morris Bell died peacefully at home surrounded by her beloved family on January 26, 2007. Mrs. Bell was born on September 27, 1938 and raised in Sanford, North Carolina. She was the daughter of George Edward and Daisy Gilmore Morris.
Mrs. Bell graduated from Sanford Central High School in Sanford, North Carolina where she was a varsity cheerleader her junior and senior years. She attended St. Mary’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
Mrs. Bell made her debut at the 1957 Terpsichorean Ball in Raleigh, North Carolina. On September 27, 1959 she married Gustavous Holmes Bell, III, originally from Dillon, South Carolina. They were married for forty two years. Mrs. Bell was predeceased by her parents, George Edward and Daisy Gilmore Morris.
She is survived by her three children, Elizabeth Amanda Bell Weisiger and her husband Edward Innes Weisiger, Jr. of Charlotte, North Carolina, Suzanne Adair Bell Woods and her husband James Michael Woods, Gustavous Holmes Bell IV and his wife Elisabeth Braswell Bell, all of Savannah. In addition she is survived by her adoring grandchildren, Elizabeth Amanda Morris Weisiger, Anne Marshall Weisiger and Grace Adair Weisiger, all of Charlotte; Elizabeth Hancock Woods, William Michael Woods, John Edward Woods, Gustavous Holmes Bell V, and Elisabeth Sides McIntosh Bell, all of Savannah.
The family would like to thank Dr. Steve Morris, Dr. Mark Murphy, Dr. Bharesh Patel, Dr. Bill Wessinger, Dr. Carl Kemp, Dr. Steven Brower, Dr. Ben Watson and Dr. John Patella. Also, a tremendous thanks to the nursing staff at Memorial Health University Hospital and to all of Mrs. Bell’s devoted home care professionals.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 11:00 am at Independent Presbyterian Church located on 207 Bull Street, Savannah, Georgia.
A graveside service will follow at Bonaventure Cemetery located on Bonaventure Road. The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service at The Oglethorpe Club located on 450 Bull Street.
