Joseph Eugene Lambright
Joe E. Lambright died on Friday, January 26, 2007 at the age of 92. He was born on April 26, 1914 in Brunswick, Georgia. As a youth in coastal Georgia, he developed a lifelong love of sailing and Georgia’s tidal marshes. A graduate of South Georgia Teacher’s College now Georgia Southern in 1937, he taught high school briefly. He then began working as a newspaper reporter, first with the Savannah Morning News and then the Brunswick News. During World War II he served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. San Juan and the U.S.S. Kingman. He then resumed his newspaper career in Savannah working his way up to managing editor of the Savannah Morning News. His next career was in county government and he retired as County Administrator in 1979. He was a past president of the Lions Club and a member of the Cosmos Club. He was very active in the First Presbyterian Church, becoming an Elder Emeritus in 2001.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, of 40 years, Eloise Graham in 1980. He then married Dorine Glass, who died in 1983. He was then lucky enough to marry Frances Welch who made him happy for 17 years before she died in 2003. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Penne Ham and his brother, Ed Lambright.
He is survived by: his daughter, Mary Lambright, and her husband, John Haefner, of Savannah; his foster daughter, Jeri Field and her husband, Dudley, and their family, of Marietta; grandson and wife, Walter and Sondra Ham of Pembroke; granddaughter and husband, Amy and Matthew Nunnelee of Kansas City; three great-grandsons, Joseph Ham, Graham and Blake Nunnelee; his former son-in-law, Chip Ham and wife Pat; his sister-in-law, Jose Lambright of Brunswick; and many beloved nieces, nephews and step-relatives.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 29, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church 520 Washington Avenue. In lieu of flowers, you may make a contribution to the charity of your choice.
