Edwin Samuel Lennox

Ed was born June 9, 1920, and grew up in Savannah Georgia. He left Savannah to attend college at Vanderbilt University and later Cornell. He began a scientific career working on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, NM during WWII, worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, taught courses for the World Health Organization, and later settled in La Jolla, CA as a founding member of the Salk Institute. In between and after, his professional accomplishments are too numerous to list.

During his adult life he traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He spent over 20 years living in Europe, returning to the U.S. from the U.K. after the death of his first wife, Helen Carey Lennox, to whom he was married for 46 years. He survived his second wife of 14 years, Reggie Kriss, and in his nineties, married Cheryl Barton.

Ed had a strong intellect and an insatiable curiosity. His interests encompassed science, art, music, people and nature, and he never lost his interest in learning.

He is survived by family members, including five children, Dan Smith, Nena Thomas, Caroline Lennox, Nicolai Lennox, and Carla Lennox, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Family will gather for a graveside interment at Bonaventure Cemetery on October 6, 2018.
