Siegvart J. “Sig” Robertson, a lifelong Savannah resident, died Saturday April 28 in Roswell, Georgia. His wife Dorothy Newton Robertson had predeceased him. Sig was born January 4, 1921 in Savannah. He graduated from Armstrong Junior College with an three year Associates Degree in Finance and Commerce in 1941. While at Armstrong, he learned to fly and was President of the Armstrong Flying Club. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. For the first part of the war, Sig served as a trainer pilot. He volunteered for combat duty and captained a B24 Bomber with the 392nd Bomber Group based in England. In 1944 his plane was shot down and he crash landed in Switzerland. He was interned in Switzerland for four months until he escaped into France. After the war, he was instrumental in the creation of the 158th Fighter Squadron, 158th Utility Flight, 158th Weather Station and 216th Air Service Group of the Air National Guard at Chatham Field. In 2005 he was awarded The Georgia Commendation Medal by the Governor of Georgia for his service to the Georgia Air National Guard and his unyielding dedication to safety. Mr. Robertson was a member of the Georgia Bar Association, the Savannah Board of Realtors and the Swiss Internees Association. He worked for years with the Savannah Sugar Refinery and later was self employed in construction, real estate sales and property management.

Mr. Robertson is survived by a daughter Deanna Grim of Atlanta, Georgia, a son David Robertson of Snellville, Georgia, grandchildren Ken Grim, Chris Grim , Megan Kovach, David Goossens, Cheryl Goossens, and Jacob Robertson; great grandchildren; Sam Grim, Max Grim, Lucy Grim, and Adeline Kovach; and brothers Jack Robertson of New York, Raymond Robertson of Charleston, South Carolina and Jimmy Robertson of Tybee Island, Georgia. Brothers Edgar, Mike, Joseph and Gilbert Robertson predeceased him.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 Tuesday May 1at Fox & Weeks Hodgson Memorial location.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday May 2 at White Bluff United Methodist Church, with burial services to follow in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
