Savannah, Georgia - Sue Hammett Poyner died May 1, 2007, at Spanish Oaks Retreat under the care of Hospice, amid family and loving caregivers. She was born February 14, 1910 in Asheville, Alabama to parents Laura Jane Collins Hammett and John Milton Hammett. A graduate of Troy State Teachers College, she was a classroom teacher for more than twenty-five years, specializing in reading.
A longtime resident of Atlanta, Georgia she was a member of Druid Hills Baptist Church and the Philathea Sunday School Class. In addition, she also taught in the Intermediate Department, was director during the 1970’s of the International Program, which taught English as a second language, and finally, kept the nursery.
An advocate for those in need, especially children, her network of family, neighbors, church members and medical professionals provided healthcare, improved living conditions, and educational opportunities for countless individuals seeking a better life. Treasured by her family, this generous and loving Spirit was loved by all.
Survivors include daughter, Judith P. Crisp and her husband John W. Crisp of Savannah; daughter-in-law, Carole W. Poyner of Columbia, South Carolina; sister, Rosa H. Lawley of Anniston, Alabama; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew.
Visitation will be Friday, May 4, 2007, from 1:30- 2:30 pm. at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, Georgia.
Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Riverdale Cemetery conducted by Rev. Jonathan Spencer.
Remembrances may be made to Spanish Oaks Hospice, 8510 Whitfield Avenue, Savannah, Georgia 31406, Druid Hills Baptist Church, 1085 Ponce de Leon Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia 30306, or a charity of choice.
