Paul Norman Clawson

Paul Norman Clawson
-Savannah- Paul Norman Clawson, 81, died Friday May 11, 2007 at home, with family, under the care of Hospice. He was born August 22, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Rose Rupp Clawson and Otto Aquiler Clawson. Paul was drafted into World War II just prior to the end of that war and then returned to active duty where he served in the Air Force during the Korean War. During his service in the Korean War he received a number of honors including the Distinguished Flying Cross.
After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology with a Minor in Mining from the University of Illinois, he taught at Montana University in Missoula while he completed his Master’s Degree in Geology. Paul worked as a geologist, first for International Minerals and Chemical Corporation out of Skokie, Illinois and then with Freeport Sulphur out of New York. It was his work in the mining of phosphate that brought him with family, to Savannah 41 years ago. So charmed by the city were they that they elected to remain in Savannah to raise their family rather than transfer with Freeport Sulphur. During the core drilling for phosphate in the Savannah area, Paul learned of the shallow water aquifers which gave him the idea to begin his business Geothermics Inc. Paul began drilling shallow wells for irrigation and geological consulting and opened Geothermics in 1972. During his well-drilling years he also continued to consult for several other companies including W.R.Grace out of New York. He spent time evaluating coal reserves in Colorado and diamond reserves in Brazil. Professionally he was a member of the Georgia Water Well Drilling Association.
Paul is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marlene: daughter, Sherry C. McClain and her husband James E. McClain and two grandsons, Matthew J. McClain, and Christopher J. McClain of Savannah. Also, daughter, Kimberley S. Parsons and her husband Huston Parsons, and 2 grandchildren, and Taylor and Michelle Parsons.
Visitation will be 5-7 on Tuesday May 15th at Fox and Weeks Islands Chapel on Hwy 80. Graveside services will be held May 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Greenwich Cemetery conducted by Rev. John Mitchell of Wilmington Island United Methodist Church.
Remembrances: The Georgia Veterans Administration or to Hospice Savannah, Inc. P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, Georgia 31416-0190. The family of Paul Norman Clawson would like to express its heartfelt thanks to the kind members of Hospice Savannah.

Paul Clawson was like a big brother to me as a kid during the late 60's and early 70's. We had many common interests and always managed to have fun together building 'stuff'. He was a great American who served his country in time of war. He will be missed and I will always remember his nice smile.
