Savannah, GA - Bruce Campbell Saxman, a member of Bull Street Baptist Church, died at Hospice House, on May 19, 2007, at the age of 92. He was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and lived most of his adolescent years in Bradenton, Florida.
After graduating from Manatee County High School, he joined the Florida National Guard and worked with a trucking company before starting his own produce trucking company in 1935. In 1941 he began a career with the Seaboard Railroad as a fireman and later road engineer working out of Savannah, Georgia. He retired from the Seaboard Coastline Railroad in 1976 as road foreman of engineers on the Atlanta Division, and moved back to Savannah where he enjoyed serving on the board of deacons at the First Baptist Church of the Islands, gardening, and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, Alice Faye Cox Saxman; parents, John Ira Saxman and Jessie Campbell Saxman of Latrobe and Bradford, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Pauline S. Henry and Helen S. Brooks; and a brother, William David Saxman.
Surviving are a son, William Bruce Saxman and his wife, Debbie, of Savannah; two daughters, Nancy S. Strojny and Elliott Williamson of Tybee Island and Alicia S. Barrow and her husband, Richard, of Tybee Island. He also leaves six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews as well as Christian friend and “buddy”, Jessie Dewhart.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
