Celebrating the life of
Eiichi "AJ" Katamura
Passed away on October 07, 2018
Eiichi “AJ” Katamura (55), passed away on October 7, 2018 in Savannah, GA at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.
He was born January 31, 1963 in Tokyo, Japan and was one of six siblings. He moved to the United States by himself at the age of 18 and eventually moved to Savannah at 19. In Savannah, he started his sushi-making career at Sakura on River Street, a popular Japanese eatery in the 80’s. In 1989, Eiichi moved back to New York, where he met his current wife, Mieko, and then moved to Cincinnati, where they had their daughter, Miwa. After moving back to Savannah in 1996, Eiichi continued making sushi at Hirano’s until he eventually opened up his own MIWA Japanese Restaurant in Pooler, which he named after his daughter.
Over the last 30 years, Eiichi became well-known in the Savannah area, based on overall craftsmanship and true authenticity of his Japanese cuisine. His customers loved him for his sense of humor and his love for his family. During Eiichi’s free time, he loved to play golf on the weekends and enjoyed a nice, cold beer after a long day of work. He’s extremely proud of his daughter, who is expected to graduate from Georgia Tech this May and is always seen wearing Georgia Tech gear. He was a great friend, husband and father, and he will be loved and missed by many people.
Surviving are his wife and his daughter, along with his mother and five siblings.
Visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel.
Our heartfelt and deepest sympathy to the Katamura family for the loss of your dear loved one. May the thoughts of knowing that friends and family share in your grief be of comfort to your family. God keeps those who have fallen asleep in death in His memory because they are precious in his eyes “Psalm 147:3” and 2 Corinthians 1:3,4”

We were deeply sorry to hear about "AJs" untimely passing. We always sat at the "Miwa"sushi bar so we could visit with him, mostly about Japan and the achievements of his daughter, Miwa, of whom he and Mieko-san were so justifiably proud. We thought of him as a good friend and we will miss him greatly.

Knowing AJ and be blessed with being able to know his family is one of our blessings in life. Also being a regular customer at his restaurant has spoiled us for excellence in sushi which cannot be matched! Our prayers go to God for Mieko and Miwa to be comforted in their loss. May God bless you both. Love in Christ, Roff and Paulette

Eiichi has been our favorite sushi chef for the last 21 years when we moved to Savannah. He was a perfectionist and always provided us with our favorite things to eat. Over the years we got to know him, his love of his daughter and wife, and golf! We even had the pleasure of playing golf with him at The Landings one day - I remember that he won! We will truly miss him . To Meiko and Miwa, we offer our sincerest sympathy and prayers for your family.

AJ was a wonderful chef. But as the years went by we came to know him and his family more personally. We saw in him an excellence in everything he did. He loved his family and wanted only the best for them. He always gave his best and he had very high standards. We were honored to know him and he will be missed.

We are so blessed to have been able to know Eiichi, Mieko and Miwa for more than a decade. Eiichi's morning waves to us on his way to get his morning newspaper will be greatly missed, as will his smile and kind demeanor. It truly was an honor to meet him, know him, be his next door neighbor but most importantly, be his friend. Mieko and Miwa, as always, we love you both and we are here if you need anything at all.
