VERTIE HALL DAVIS

Vertie Davis passed away at home on Friday, July 20, 2007. Born to Jake and Alice Stills of Candler County on December 16, 1917, she resided in Savannah for sixty-seven years, beginning in 1940. A firm believer, she made her church home at Bible Baptist Church for forty-seven years, where she was continually active in the Senior Sunday School Department. She was also a member of the Hairdresser’s Association and an active bowler for thirty years. She also enjoyed playing bingo at the Senior Citizen’s Center. Mrs. Davis held various jobs in her life time, beginning with Union Camp in the early 1940’s. She then moved on to become a Welder at Southeastern Shipyard. After leaving the shipyard, she became an insurance sales lady for Life and Casualty Insurance of Tennessee in the 1950’s. She found her niche, however, in 1959 as the owner and operator of Vertie’s Hair Salon where she worked until her final days.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph O. Davis of forty years, her only child, Grady Lamar Prosser, Sr., and her sister, Blonnie Canady.

Surviving Mrs. Davis are two grandsons, Grady and Theresa Prosser, Jr. of Roswell. Georgia and Dwain and Suzanne Prosser of Cumming, Georgia, five great grandchildren, a brother, Leo Woodcock and two sisters, Deen Bulloch and Hazel Jones.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 21, 2007 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel.

Funeral Services will be Monday, July 23, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Bible Baptist Church with Dr. Herbert Hubbard and Rev. Tommy East officiating.

Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

GUEST BOOK

Dear Grady, Dwain and families, I just learned that 'Nanny' died. I was out of town. I have many fond memories of being with your family, with her and Daddy Joe. She loved you guys so much. She was a gracious and warm person: Her children have risen up and called her blessed. Love, Jimmy Morel

Grady, Dwain and families: So sorry to hear about your grandmother. You're in my prayers. Take care and God Bless you all. Love ya, Nancy Dixon

- Nancy Dixon, Jennings, FL

I remember playing with Vertie and her sisters when we were growing up together in Candler County. They were my cousins but since I didn't have any sisters, they were more like sisters to me.
