Celebrating the life of
Richmond McDowell
April 05, 1928 - August 12, 2007
Savannah - Richmond McDowell born in Margaret, AL on April 5, 1928, son of Flanders and Ruby McDowell entered into eternal life on Sunday, August 12, 2007. His early childhood years were spent in Lynch, KY. At the age of ten he moved with his parents to Philadelphia, PA where he later graduated from Murrell E. Dobbins Vocational/Technical High School. It was also in Philadelphia where he met Ruth Taliaferro whom he married in Toledo, Ohio in 1950. They moved to Detroit, MI and from their union three daughters were born Sharon, Gail and Ricki.
Affectionately known as “Ricky” he loved life and people which he served in his profession as a Department of Transportation city of Detroit Bus Driver for over 30 years. He retired in 1983 and moved to Savannah, GA in 1988.
He was an avid sportsman who dominated bowling and golf for many years. While in Savannah he worked as a part-time ranger at the Bacon Park Golf Course where his commitment to young people led to the founding of the Ricky McDowell Junior Golf League.
He leaves to mourn his memory a devoted wife of 57 years Ruth; three daughters Sharon Irvin Benjamin of Savannah, GA; Gail McDowell of Detroit, MI; and Ricki Will Billins of Columbus, GA; one brother L. B. McDowell of Manchester, GA; one sister Jan Joseph McDowell-Jones of Philadelphia, PA; sister-in-laws Bernice Blake of Easton, PA; Earnell and Mae Belle McDowell of Manchester, GA; seven grandchildren Daniel Holts II, Richard and Erica Benjamin, Robert and Briana Holmes, Alyssa and Maya Billins; and four great-grandsons Deyvhan, Keyjunte, Kahlil, and Daniel Holts III; along with a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He will live in the hearts of our family forever and be remembered by the many friends he made. His smile shall never be forgotten and the joys he shared with all of us. Because goodness and fairness never die, they go on shining like the sun in the sky. Death is powerless to destroy or to sever the loving memories of those he left behind. His gallant soul has taken flight into a land where there is no sorrow or pain that heaven cannot heal. He will live on in the lives of his children and their children’s children and his spirit will never die. God has granted him peace and we shall be eternally thankful.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
