Irene  O'Neill

Irene Jankowski O’Neill, 72, died August 17, 2007 at Hospice Savannah, Inc. She was born in Elmira Heights, New York and was retired from her duties as an Air Force wife in 1973 and settled with her husband and children in Savannah. Her gift to this world was her children, grandchildren and great grandson that she deeply loved. Her life was to take care of her family, putting their needs first. She loved sports and going to Benedictine and Wofford games. She loved those “BC Boys” Mrs. O’Neill was past president of Knights of Columbus No. 5588 Women’s Auxiliary, communicant of St. James Catholic Church and member of Smart Seniors. After the passing of her husband, Robert W. O’Neill, she filled her time by going to Wofford football games where her grandson Chris plays and by playing Bunco at Smart Seniors. She loved taking care of her “Baby”, Rebel, her lab. There was a special joy in her heart, when her grandson, Steven put her great grandson in her arms recently. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert W. O’Neill and her son, Robert J. O’Neill.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Arlene O. and Lawrence “Larry” J. Wilhelm of Savannah; brother and sister-in-law, Floyd and Marsha Jankowski of Horseheads, NY: grandchildren, Steven E. Collins and his wife Dawn of Rincon; Christopher R. Collins of Savannah; Hollie M. O’Neill of Savannah; Stephanie C. O’Neill of Savannah; step-granddaughters, Heidi and Victoria Wilhelm both of Savannah; great grandson, Sean O’Neill Collins of Rincon; aunt and uncle, Helen and Andy Machalko of Elmira Heights, NY; several nieces, nephews and two special friends, Clare Frew and Jeanette Galletta both of Savannah.

Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2007 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with a Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:30 a.m. Monday, August 20, 2007 at St. James Catholic Church with The Reverend Mark Ross, Celebrant

Burial: Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

Irene will be missed by our family at every Wofford Football Game. WE have enjoyed knowing Her and sharing our football years with Brian and Chris.
