Howard Lee Moore, Sr.
SAVANNAH - Mr. Howard Lee Moore, Sr. 82, passed away August 24th at Hospice Savannah. He was born July 26, 1925 in Screven County Georgia to Josiah and Oppie Lee Virginia Moore. The family moved to Savannah when Howard was a child and he lived there the remainder of his life. He was a veteran of World War II, enlisting in 1940 at age 15 upon the mobilization of the 118th Field Artillery of the Georgia National Guard. He served in the South Pacific with the 503rd Parachute Infantry and was discharged in 1946 while serving as a medic with the 158th Infantry.
After the war he returned to Savannah and worked for the American Oil Company for several years in various capacities; truck driver, plant manager and finally, district sales representative. After leaving American Oil he owned and operated a service station in Sandfly and worked in retail automobile sales with several dealerships in Savannah. He also worked as an independent trucker. In 1985 he was employed by O.C. Welch as General Manager of O.C.’s first Ford dealership in Darien, Georgia. Before his final retirement he worked in several dealerships with O.C. where he was affectionately known as “H”.
“Big Howard” as he was known to the family was predeceased by his parents, step-father Riley Bacon, his brothers Matt and Sam and his sisters Gladys, Emma and Margaret. He is survived by his two sons who he dearly loved, Howard Lee Moore, Jr. and John S. Sammy Moore. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Tom Schwanz, numerous nieces and nephews and his dog Beaufort.
There will be a memorial visitation at Fox and Weeks Hodgson Chapel on Monday August 27th from 6-8pm. Funeral services will be private. The family requests that in lieu of flowers remembrances be made to Hospice Savannah, Inc., P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
