Annette Elizabeth Hamlyn Gompels
SAVANNAH - Annette Elizabeth Hamlyn Gompels passed away peacefully at Hospice Savannah on August 28th at 79 years of age.
She was born in Durban, Natal, South Africa on September 23, 1927, the only daughter of Ernest Augustus Charles and Hillirie Hamlyn Harding of Clovelly, Mooi River, Natal.
She studied microbiology at Natal University and embarked on a career as a medical research scientist. Starting at the South African Institute for Medical Research under Dr. James Gear, she proceeded to the National Institute for Medical Research in the UK where, under Sir Christopher Andrewes and Sir Alec Isaacs, she worked on the discovery of interferon and the isolation of the influenza virus.
Annette raised 4 children while living overseas with her husband on international assignments in the petroleum industry. She returned to research in the pharmaceutical industry with Novartis in New Jersey and then Wyeth Inc. in New York.
In 1985 she joined her husband in retirement at The Landings. She enjoyed tennis, bridge, mahjong, charitable work at St. John’s and the Bamboo Farm, service as a docent at the Greene-Meldrim House and her gardening. A move to Tybee Island followed in 1999 and then to the Henderson Golf Community.
She is survived by her husband Joost Gompels, son Mark and Nina Gompels of Savannah, daughter Dr. Janet and Bryan Marler of Delmar, NY, daughter Dr. Ursula Gompels of London, England, daughter Elizabeth Gompels of Boston, MA, and by much loved grandchildren Peter and Andrew Marler and William and Matthew Gompels.
Visitation will be 10:30 to 12.30 on Friday, August 31, 2007 at Fox and Weeks, 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, 31406.
A Requiem Eucharist for family and friends will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 804 Jones Ave, Tybee Island, September 22, 2007 at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints Church, P O Box 727, Tybee Island, 31328; or Hospice Savannah, P O Box 13190, 31416; or the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Ave, New York NY, 10028; or The Lymphoma Foundation, Box 286236, New York, NY 10128.
