SAVANNAH – Margaret Applewhite Phillips, age 92, died Wednesday, October 17, 2007, at her home. A native and lifelong resident of Savannah, Mrs. Phillips was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and taught school at St. James and Blessed Sacrament for over forty-five years. She was instrumental in forming the Head Start Program in Savannah.

A resident of Isle of Hope for many years, Mrs. Phillips was an avid gardener and a member and past president of the Wymberly Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Phillips, Sr. and her parents, Henry and Jennie Saunders Applewhite.

Surviving are two daughters, Michelle Phillips Whitledge of Savannah and Jude Phillips Smith and her husband Joseph B. Smith of Atlanta ; two sons, Dr. John A. Phillips, Jr. and his wife, Suzanne Smith Phillips of Columbus, GA and Robert A. Phillips and his wife Harriet Thompson Phillips of West Chester, PA; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and her brother-in-law, Henry O. Phillips of Wilmington, NC.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. A Rosary Service will be held at 7::00 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 12:00 Noon on Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
