Jewell Granade Perkins

Jewell Granade Perkins of Savannah, Georgia passed away Monday November 12, 2007 after a brief illness in Hampstead, North Carolina. She was born September 8, 1915 in Savannah, Georgia.

She was preceded in death by her mother Edna Louise Granade and husband of 51 years Eluigi Leggett Perkins. She is survived by her three daughters, Lorraine Patten and husband Clifton Patten of Hampstead, NC, Lewonna P. Cooler of Savannah, GA and Loretta P. Hencely of Macon GA. Her Grandchildren Elisabeth Patten Fitzgerald and husband Timothy, Thomas Cooler, Carmen Golden and her husband Joseph, Steven Cooler and wife Suzi, Stephenia Cooler and Jason Hencely. Great-Grand children Christopher Criswell, Clifton Criswell, Jonathan Hester, Steven Cooler, Jessica Cooler, Stephenia Fitzgerald, Emily Fitzgerald and a special child she grew to love as her own, Sally Lynn Ashlock and husband Phillip.

Mrs. Perkins was a life-long member of First Baptist Church where she cared for two generations of the children in the Nursery Department. Today many members remember Perky with her gentle persuasive attitude toward Christian living and behavior. Until recently she enjoyed her involvement with the children's musical summer camp, "The Joy Shop". The classics will miss you, Perky. She was a charter member of the Girl Scout Troop begun by Juliette Gordon Low's niece. Scouting became an intricate and vital element with her in the community and in her family's life. "Sparrow," her camp nickname, denotes her faithfulness to family and friends. She was the last surviving member of the Topaz Club organized in the early 40’s by associates of the W.T. Grant Company in Savannah, GA. As an instructor in the American Camping Association, she enjoyed years of outdoor adventures and teaching experiences. She earned an AA Degree from Mercer University. The world of knowledge was a sphere she constantly sought. Having received the generous support of Hospice - Savannah 1989, she became a sincere and caring volunteer. Her passion became "The Helping Hands", a children's camp for those whose lives were affected by family or friends with terminal illnesses. The decorating of the Festival of Trees brought her great joy. She as a loved and respected member of the Puppeteers of America and UNIMA, serving as an active board member she enjoyed traveling to shows across the country. Savannah Puppetry Guild of Savannah will miss her smile and active involvement. Today Perky's Puppets, even with tears, sit quietly, continue to smile and await the touch of their friends’ hand. She was a recent retiree of Belk’s Stores and had been honored as the National Employee of the year.

Her gifts of charitable endeavors were exceeded only by her faith in and love for the Lord. She truly lived the great commandment. She was a loving Christian Mother and a friend to all. She will continue to live in our hearts forever.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to all the care givers of the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Wilmington, North Carolina who lovingly gave Mrs. Perkins and her family care, comfort and support. This enabled her to spend her last days at home with her family as she desired.
