Carlyle A. "Tony" Verrett

GARDEN CITY – Carlyle A. "Tony" Verrett, 88, died Saturday, November 17, 2007, at Westview Nursing Center.
Tony was born April 17, 1919 in Jeanerette, LA. At the age of two he moved with his parents to the Sugar Refinery "Village" in Port Wentworth where his father worked. Tony was a lifelong resident of Garden City and member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Port Wentworth.
After graduating from Savannah High School, Tony pitched for a minor league baseball team in the Savannah Ogeechee River League. Tony enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country for four years during World War II, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant.
After the war Tony continued his baseball career for five more years. He then graduated from the Air Condition and Refrigeration College in Chicago, IL. After graduating, Tony worked for Quarrels Refrigeration and Air Condition of Savannah. Tony later joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 508, in Savannah, where he worked until his retirement. He was a past member of the 183rd Order of the Savannah Elks Club and a member of the Chatham Artillery.
In his retirement years he enjoyed golf and hunting. He really loved to fish and crab at "the river" on Colonel’s Island in Liberty County, and loved for family and friends to come over and share laughs and to just have fun.
Tony was very proud of his Cajun heritage and loved listening and dancing to Dixieland Jazz. Tony loved his family, loved his friends, and really loved life.
Tony was preceded in death by his father Nicholas, mother Hazel, sister Cecilia, and brother Ray.
Surviving are his wife of fifty-seven years, Billie Verrett of Garden City; a son, Nick Crowder and his wife Lynn, of Rincon; grandchildren, Candis Crowder of Atlanta, Chris Crowder, his wife Rochelle, and their son, Connor, of Guyton, and Chad Crowder of Statesboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.
