Celebrating the life of
Dr. Jason Shane Speir
May 29, 1974 - November 28, 2007
Dr. Jason Shane Speir
SAVANNAH- Dr. Jason Shane Speir passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 28, leaving behind his beloved wife Anna Koncul Speir of Savannah. Jason was a native Savannahian, and he practiced medicine in Savannah, working in neurology and specializing in movement disorders. He had worked at Savannah Neurology at St. Joseph's/Candler Hospital. Jason graduated from Savannah Country Day School and University of Georgia. He accomplished his medical school and residency at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
Jason loved the outdoors to include his passions of hunting and fishing. He had an amazing soft, gentle soul that is evidenced by his phenomenal ceramic art in addition to the passion and endless hours he sacrificed caring for countless patients. He touched a multitude of people through his medical practice, assisting seriously ill patients by treating them with precious, devoted time and attention. Jason, who attained the honor of Eagle Scout, lived his life according to his high school quotation: Carpe Diem.
Jason is also survived by his mom and step-father, BJ and John Tanner of Richmond Hill; his father and step-mother, Ron and Richa Speir of Savannah; his brother, sister-in-law, and two nieces, Ron and Brenda Speir and Hayley and Ella of Richmond Hill; his grandmother, Florine Speir; many aunts and uncles, Patricia Smart of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Laurette Shaw of Atlanta, Jimmy Mock of St Mary's, and Linda Fields of Crystal Lake, Illinois. He has many more loved great aunts, great uncles, cousins, and infinite friends as well as the Koncul family of Savannah with whom he and Anna loved.
Visitation will be from 10am till 12 Noon on Saturday, December 1 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island. Mass of Christian Burial will be at
12 Noon following the visitation. Internment will follow at Northside Cemetery, family plot in Pembroke, Ga. at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Jason Speir Memorial Fund care of First Chatham Bank, 111 Barnard, Savannah, Georgia 31401 from which funds will be split between the Georgia Wildlife Federation for his love of nature and Alzheimer's research in honor of his two grandmothers and great uncle.

My deepest simpathies and condolences to Anna and to Jason's family. I am deeply saddened as news of Jason's unexpected departure from this world has reached me today. Jason and I were hunting and fishing buddies while he was training and I was teaching at MCG. I thought it odd that I had not heard from him over the entire course of a hunting season, but I chalked it up to his devotion to his patients and my moving from Augusta. I cannot express how much those who knew him, and those who did not get the chance, will miss his kind fun loving spirit.
- Joe Sullivan, Birmingham, AL
BJ, John, Ron, Brenda and Ron: Just wanted to say that we remember Jason everyday, however today has been the first month since his passing and we wanted you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Please know that we share your grief and sorrow. We love you.
- Roy and Mary, Victoria,, TX
We were so sorry to hear of your loss, and just wanted to let B J and family know that we will be remembering you in our prayers. What a wonderful young man he became! Of course we never doubted that for a second....he was such a sweet, sensitive little boy when we knew him. I'm sure that helped him to be a fine doctor. God bless you all, and strengthen you during your time of grieving. Much love, Cindy and David Harrell
- David and Cindy Harrell, Bossier City, LA
To the Speir family, I pray that you will find peace at this very difficult time. I have known Dr Speir for a couple of years first meeting him at MCG and then at his practice in Savannah and he was always so kind. I am sorry for your loss. God Bless you and your family.
- Tina Nordeen, North Augusta, SC
Like many others, I went to college and med school with Jason. We rotated through 3rd year together and without Jason's fun-loving spririt, I never would have made it through- especially that surgery rotation. I fondly remember working on his backyard garden with him and Chris and sharing family vegetable recipes together. We came up with some pretty interesting ways to cook all the eggplants he harvested that year! I am not surprised to hear how much of an impact he made on the lives of his patients. I learned a ton about communicating with patients from watching Jason. I haven't seen Jason in years, but I know I'll never forget him. My deepest condolences go out to the entire family and all his friends. Jennifer Eidson McCain
- Jennifer Eidson McCain, Birmingham, AL
As one of Jason's SCDS and UGA classmates, we shared many good times. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Love, Laura
- Laura Quattlebaum Gower, Midland, GA
To Anna & the entire Speir Family, I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Jason's sudden passing, and my thoughts and prayers, as well as those of my wife's, are with all of you constantly. Jason was such an incredible person and a dear friend. He taught me about hunting and was with me when I shot my first deer. I feel very fortunate to have been blessed with his friendship, and am thankful for all of the memories I am left with.
- Todd Schuessler, New York, NY
This type of guestbook is good therapy for Jason’s family and friends. We want to express our deepest sorrow to Anna, BJ, Ron, Richa, and John. Jason was a best friend to many and an enemy to no one. He was different- he would pin you down, make plans, and follow through with them- there were no empty promises. He was selfless and always looked out for others first and himself last- a characteristic that made him such a great person but may have been his Achilles’ heel. As medical school roommates, we shared stress, joys, a garden, a quasi-bachelor pad, hunting trips, fishing tales, and infinite good times. After parting ways for residency, we came back to Savannah at the same time. We shared several patients, and there was not a single one that didn’t tell me how well Jason listened to them and helped them with their problems. He worked hard to help others in and out of the hospital. There are many things in life that don’t make any sense, and nothing in death makes sense at all. The best way we can think of to honor Jason is to treat our friends and the people in our lives as well as Jason treated us. We love you, Jason.
- Chris and Jennifer Melroy, Savannah, GA

My sympathies to Jason's family, wife, Mother, and Father. I remember him as a very vibrant, fun toddler. It has been years since I have had an opportunity to see him, but have many wonderful memories of his Mother, Betty Jean, and his Father, Ron as well as his Uncle Jimmy Mock and Aunt Patty. James, Laura, Ron, and Jason cousins spent many times together at their Grandparent's home in Pembroke. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Mock, Sr. grandparents, would be so very proud of his accomplishments in life. His life and devotion to medicine and taking care of his patients will be an inspiration to all. Melvin and Deloris Speir were very special to my now deceased Mother and Father, Ben and Bessie Mae Brewton. They visited often and were a very special part of all our lives. Mama and Daddy looked forward to their daily visits and I kept in touch with the Mock family through them. The Speir family and the Eugene Mock, Sr. family were a very influential inspiration in the Pembroke community. I have admired them for years. They would be proud of all Jason's accomplishments. Jason's life was touched by everyone who met him. He was so special to many. Too soon, his candle was burned, but his memories will live forever. Special condolences to his wife and family. I am remembering all in my prayers. His life was taken too soon, but we of course do not question our Maker. Special remembrances, sympathies and thoughts to all. With love and sympathy, Sue Angert

Jason was such a kind and wonderful person. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I will never forget his passion for the outdoors and the kindness and compassion he shared with me and my wife through a very difficult time. I am so sorry for your loss. Steve Smith
