Dr. Fenwick Tattnall Nichols
Fenwick Tattnall Nichols, died January 4, 2008 in Savannah, GA. He was born December 9, 1919 to Lillian Askew and Fenwick T. Nichols, Jr. in Savannah, Georgia. He attended Savannah public schools and graduated from Armstrong Junior College in 1939. He attended the University of Georgia for one year, then the Medical College of Georgia, graduating as an ensign in the United States Navy. He served in the Pacific Theater for two years then returned to complete his medical training by doing internships at University Hospital and Grady Memorial in Atlanta.
He returned to Savannah and opened his medical practice in 1949 only to be called back into Navy service for a year serving at the USN Hospital in San Diego. He eventually opened his practice at the Medical Arts Center in 1952 and became actively involved with the teaching program at Memorial Medical Center concentrating on Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He saw the need to recruit a qualified cardiologist and worked to bring Dr. Walker Beeson and Dr. Thomas Yeh to Savannah. All three were honored by Memorial at the dedication of the Heart and Heart Vascular Institute in June 2004.
Dr. Nichols served as Chief of Staff at Memorial and also as president of the Georgia Medical Society. The latter organization honored him in 2005 with a lifetime achievement award.
Dr. Nichols was very interested in and committed to the Red Cross Blood program, presenting himself every 56 days to donate. He eventually gave more blood than any other doctor.
He married Caroline Jean Williams with whom he practiced medicine until her retirement. After 50 years, Dr. Nichols retired to care for her until her death in 2002.
He was a member of the St. Andrews Society, American Medical Association, First District Medical Society, Georgia Medical Society, and the American College of Physicians. He was a member of First Baptist Church and served as a Deacon and as a member of the endowment committee.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed the out of doors, preparing game he brought home, and gardening.
He is survived by his second wife, Jane B. Jennings; sons Fenwick T. Nichols IV Martha and William W. Nichols Barbara; daughter Edith Richard Routh; five grandchildren Daniel, Anne, Thomas, David, and Grace Routh; and by a sister Sarah Miles Pinckney; brother-in-law Ray G. Robertson; as well as nieces and nephews.
