Surviving are, his wife of 57 years, Phyllis J. Dunbar Mitchell, his daughters, Sharon L. Williams and Karen L. Jones, his brother-in-law, Lloyd E. Dunbar his good friends, Joseph and Edith Branscombs of Savannah and several cousins.
Jack was predeceased by his only grandchild, 7 years old, Lauren C. Jones on January 8, 1996.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Jack was a graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School in Elmira Heights, New York and Alfred State University. He worked in the Aviation industry his entire married life , starting with Schweizer Aircraft Corporation with gliders, then Grumman Corporation on crop dusters, purchasing spare parts and finally for Gulfstream Corporation as senior buyer until his retirement in 1992.
Jack loved working with wood and in his flowers. He enjoyed helping others and will be remembered by many for his kindness. Jack volunteered at Windsor Forest Elementary School in honor of his beloved granddaughter, Lauren, who attended second grade there.
He also volunteered many hours helping others with genealogy. He will be sadly missed by his family, close friends and neighbors.
It was Jack's request that there be no calling hours and a private family burial.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that remembrances be made to Hospice Savannah Inc.
The Family wishes to express their sincere thanks to all of the staff at Hospice Savannah for their loving and compassionate care to Jack and his wife and daughter, Dr. Joe Christian III for always being there for Jack and his wife, and to our loyal and caring friends, Edith and Joe Branscombs for always being on call for us.

GUEST BOOK

Dear Family, Jack and I shared a common interest in genealogy. We both descended from George Fred Mitchell and Sylvia Button. Effie Mitchell Dunne was my grandmother, so she and Jack's father were siblings. Jack shared a wealth of information with me that he had accumulated about the Mitchell family. I will be always be grateful for that. May the Lord comfort you during this season of loss. With love, Theresa Robinson

Jack was a wonderful loving man. Smart too, I think he could fix anything. At least he did at our house. He would always come over and fix any of our handyman problems. Our house is still standing thanks to him fixing all of the columns that we have knocked down with the cars over the years. When I was little, my brothers and I always wanted to look at the Mitchells house, at Christmas time, so we could look at the twinkling red bells he always put up. How he kept them working after all these years, we will never know.. Ricky and I always loved going in their backyard to see all of the plants, birds and the fish pond. When they would go out of town, Mr. Mitchell would give me the combination to the lock and I got the important job of watering the flowers, and fill up the bird feeders while they were gone. Jack gave us one of the fish ponds, and it is now a memorial to Lauren in our own garden. Which will in time, hopefully look like the Mitchell's backyard. When I was in college both Jack and Phyll really encouraged my interest in photography. He let me have some antique cameras to fiddle around with. All the time he was keeping up with technology and learning about the new cameras. As we came into the computer age he was more than glad help us out there as well. He and Phyllis are so very special to us. I never had a grandpa, and when my grandmothers died and Lauren died about the same time, we adopted each other. They have helped mold me in becoming the person I am today. When Lauren died that must have been one of the hardest times for Jack. He always knew that she was up in Heaven looking down over us. As we are missing him so much now, I am glad that he isn't hurting anymore and is with Lauren again. Jack, you will be greatly missed and we will love you forever.
