James Candler Clary, Sr.
SAVANNAH – James Candler Clary, Sr., 85, died Friday, March 21, 2008, at Savannah Square.
Born April 28, 1922 in Byronville, Dooly County, GA, he was the son of the late Rev. Dr. George E. and Ruby Mottweiler Clary and step-mother, Lucy Quinn Clary. He graduated form Sidney Lanier High School in Macon and attended Emory University. He served as a pilot in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
In 1948 Capt. Clary began a thirty-four career as a pilot with Delta Airlines, retiring in 1982. Formerly of Jonesboro, GA, Mr. Clary has been a resident of Savannah since 1995. He was a member of Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-three years, Mary Jane Hinely, a son, Dr. William A. Clary, and brothers, Rev. Dr. George E. Clary, Jr. and Dr. W. Upton Clary.
Surviving are a son, James C. Clary, Jr. Debra of Plano, TX; a daughter, Constance C. Sims Tom of Newark, DE; a daughter-in-law, Suzanne R. Clary Bryan Jim Bryan of Savannah; 8 grandchildren, Josh Clary Kristin of Dallas, TX, Jessie Clary of New York City, Amy C. Sims of London, England, Dr. Ethan Sims Dr. Nicole Klein of Chicago, IL, Kathryn Sims of Brooklyn, NY, W. Adam Clary, Ben Clary and Ross Clary, all of Savannah; a great-granddaughter, Zoe A. Sims of Chicago, IL; sisters-in-law, Imogene H. Pandtle of Savannah and Sarah Clary of Wilmington, DE; a brother-in-law, E. Austin Hinely of Decatur, GA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Frank Parr officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the church social hall.
Interment will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery.
The family suggests that remembrances be made to Hospice Savannah, Inc., P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416, Epworth By The Sea, 100 Arthur J. Moore Dr., St. Simons Island, GA 31522, or to the Will Clary Scholarship Fund at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church, 412 Parkersburg Rd., Savannah, GA 31406.
