SAVANNAH - Helen Kimker Hansen, wife of former architect Oscar "Red" Hansen of Savannah, died peacefully at Azalealand Nursing Home under care of Hospice on April 2, 2008.
She was born in Savannah on December 17, 1910 to John and Anna Kimker. She grew up on 41st Street and attended public schools. She worked at the Central of Georgia Railway Executive Offices in Savannah until her marriage. Her father, John Kimker, was the chief engineer for the DeSoto Hotel from 1914 until it was demolished in 1968. She and her husband and children lived at Grimball Point on Isle of Hope and spent many days fishing and crabbing on the Herb River.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Oscar and her sister, Martha Kiene. She is survived by her two sisters, Lillian Hendry and Betty Hammesfahr, her brother, John Kimker, Jr, her two sons, Oscar M. Hansen, Jr. and his wife, Beverly, of Aiken, S.C., J. Paul Hansen and his wife, Patricia, of Savannah, five grandchildren, Oscar M. Hansen, III Jill, John Paul Hansen, Jr. Annie, Sarah Katherine Miller Paul, Eric P. Hansen Melissa, and Dana J. Hansen Tara as well as thirteen great grandchildren.
Helen was one of the founders of the Festival of Trees in Savannah and much admired for her needlepoint pillows and ornaments gracing the Danish tree. She was an active member of the Rebecca Derrick Circle in the Lutheran Church of Ascension, an avid bridge player, an accomplished pianist, cook, and tennis player.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2008, at the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
