Celebrating the life of

Henry T Skipper

July 25, 1925 - June 02, 2008

Henry T Skipper

SAVANNAH – Henry Turner Skipper, Jr., died June 2, 2008 at Memorial Hospital at the age of 82. He was born in Savannah, GA on July 25, 1925 and was the only child of Doris Dieter Skipper and Henry Turner Skipper. Surviving Henry is his wife of sixty-one years, Dorothy Yager Skipper.
Having grown up in Savannah, Henry often recalled his youthful days of making pluffers to shoot china berries, having rubber gun fights, playing shinny on roller skates and half rubber games. Later he became an avid hunter and fisherman.
He attended public schools and in 1943, at the age of seventeen, enlisted in the Army Air Force Air Cadet Program. He was called to duty in August and attained the rank of Flight Officer-Bombardier. After his honorable discharge from the service he attended the University of Georgia and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
Henry's business career began at Great Dane Trailers as a sales trainee. He later served as a sales representative and branch sales manager. He organized and managed a new division for used trailer sales and in 1963 was named Vice-President of Sales for the corporation. For twenty-seven years, until his retirement, he headed all trailer sales, marketing, and advertising. During this period Great Dane Trailers grew from the seventh largest to the largest trailer manufacturer in the United States.
While at Great Dane he served on its board of directors and those of its subsidiaries; as well as several state trucking associations and the American Trucking Association Foundation. After forty-two years he retired in 1990 as Executive Vice-President and later served as a consultant.
Henry was a charter member of the German Heritage Society of which he always enjoyed fellowship with other members at various functions.
A lifelong Lutheran, he was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension where he had served on the Finance Committee and was its chairman for fourteen years as Special Funds Treasurer. He also served several terms on its Council and as chairman of its 250th Anniversary Celebration.
Henry was a past chairman of The Cotillion Club. He was a longtime member of the Chatham Club, the Oglethorpe Club, and the Savannah Yacht Club. He participated in several hunting clubs and The Gentlemen's Poker Club. An ardent outdoor enthusiast and sports fan, he spent much of his time hunting and fishing with family members and friends.
Surviving in addition to his loving wife Dorothy are his daughter Nancy Skipper Berry of Marietta, GA; two sons, Henry T. Skipper III and his wife Jeanette Elaine of Savannah, and Thomas W. Skipper and his wife Mary Frances of Clarksville, GA. There are seven grandchildren, Katherine Lowery and husband Brent, Henry T. Skipper IV and wife Heather, Albert H. Berry IV, Ashley Berry Harward and husband Brian, Thomas Clarkson Berry, Brendan Spencer Skipper, and John Francis Skipper. His great-grandchildren are Cami Lowry, Brian Lowry and Wynn Harward.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2008, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension.
Interment will follow in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
The family suggests that remembrances be made to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension, 120 Bull St., Savannah, GA 31401.
